Thanks for that contribution, pUke. You just feelin' extra small today and had to squeak up?

You got a promotion for COMBATIVES! to add here?

I'm suprised judo isn't listed up there; neither is aikido.

Yeah, judo would also be a good choice.

I wonder what grappling experience Uke has? Maybe he'll tell us.

Grappling should not be the main focus in RBMA. That being said, you'll find Judo and BJJ to be the most useful IMO.

It depends on what you're looking for. For example, I've dabbled a little in BJJ and Judo. But once I decided to do some wrestling with a friend. I thought I was doing ok, then the bastard finished me with a suplex. I'm not much of a grappler, but I also want to be proficient in it. My advice to any newbie who reads this is find something compatible with a striking art or a grappling style that has striking in it (or vice-versa).

I need help finding a good grappling art, but don't know what to chose from. So can I hear any opinion on any and can anyone tell me where i can find one in NYC.
I would do either submission wrestling or BJJ.

You don't need a grappling art. You need a weapon art.
NY (City) has some of the most F'd up knife laws in the country!
"Stick" fighting styles like Kali or Eskrima would be good, Something with Silat or modern Arnis also. Don't overlook decent RBSD or combatives...
Survival is not about what grappling style will work better in the streets. That will depend entirely on YOU. Stay safe, stay on your feet!
Grappling styles are not good against multiple attackers. While your on the ground with one the others will be kicking your skull in. Then you'll be bleeding all over the place because there will be a hole in your head from their kicks.

RBSD.....Is that Robert Busey's (the ninja guy) self defense? Just curious. I've seen some video tapes from Robert Busey's Warriors International (RBWI). They were really good tapes.

But don't take MY word on it!
                Agreed.

This ignorant old song comes up again and again from the 'theory' crowd.

I would edit that to say:

"Unarmed fighting styles are not good against multiple attackers. While you're fighting with one of them, the others will be beating your skull in. Then you'll be bleeding all over the place because there will be a hole in your head from their kicks, punches, weapons, etc. Probably the best style against multiple attackers is Track and Field."

Doesn't that sound more appropriate to you?

I've got to agree that you don't want to be on the ground against multiple attackers. Wrestling devotes an enormous amount of time to preventing your attacker from taking you down. It also specifically spends a lot of time on escapes, in other words standing up when your opponent doesn't want you to. Therefor if you're serious about not getting taken down, and being able to regain your feet if you do- having solid wrestling skills is a huge benefit.

Sorry guys, I know the horse is dead but I thought I saw it twitch out of the corner of my eye so I figured I'd give it another kick

if you want to learn to win grappling comps do bjj, if you want to fight samurias do ju jitsu but if you want tolearn how to protect yourself in a street attack scenario you need to learn a street based self protection system, check out mick coups stuff as imo thats the best.

I wouldn't say that. Unarmed fighting styles that stand up to fight are ALOT better than grappling. With stand up fighting you can use one attacker to block as a shield, you have better freedom of movement, and can kick where as on the ground you can't. Look at Krav Maga, its designed to take out the attacker as quickly as possible so you can deal with the next attacker.
