I rate MT very highly. It has a core of effective techniques, and it trains them in a realistic way. There is a "truth" to MT (like Western Boxing). If it doesn't work for real they don't fanny about pretending that it does.

I have had no direct experience of this Todd guy, but have heard positive things. If you go you can let me know what it is like.
I think you can go a long way with a few good DVDs, some home equipment and, hopefully, a like minded training partner. Not ideal, but far far better than nowt!
