  • What combative would you reconmend?

I found 3 schools that fit in my schedual. One is Haganah's F.I.G.H.T. Program. I never heard of it. Their web site is http://www.fightingarts.com/ubbthrea...Board=1&page=0, the next one is Systema. It looks interesting, but when I ask questions on-line, no one really knows about it. Their web site is http://www.fighthouse.com/systema/systema.htm. The third one is Attackproof. I think it is also called KI CHUAN DO
. Based on a WWII fighting system taugth to American Troops and Native American fighting (but also has some internal Tai Chi asspects from what they say). This is another one that is not talked about much online but it looks interesting. Their web site is http://attackproof.com/ABOUT-ATTACKP...-training.html.

Well I am just looking for something that will keep my self defence skills up and keep me in shape. They all fit my schedual, and all seem interesting. They are combat type arts from what they say. I just like to hear from some more experienced people on what they would chose. Thanks.

The self defense/ get in shape paradox...take muay thai, bjj, and the fma. Ditch systema, it's complete and utter bullshit, the WW2 combatives is cut with tai chi, and sounds like it's a scam (native american warriors? tai chi? fucking c'mon!) Krav Maga is fairly overrated in my humble opinion, and the Haganah stuff is essentially a step up, but still...

Find a school that teaches FMA/JKD, muay thai, and BJJ or CSW. And trains fighters in Muay Thai and BJJ. Train to be a fighter too. Do the FMA/JKD stuff for added self defense...but compete in MMA too. my advice. there.

lol, i would avoid all these schools. especially the one named "attackproof". joining a simple boxing or muay thai school would probobly be way better. these combative arts with names you never heard of tend to be watered down, and many are scams. joining a simple, time tested discipline like boxing, wrestling, judo and sticking with it is probobly your best bet. as you get better and better in your discipline and have a good base in something you can then start looking to other arts and adding more stuff to your arsenal and training.

        Darth -- that's 2 well put replies.
"time tested discipline" is probably the something to consider in everything new you try.

Agreed, there are TONS of good Muay-Thai, BJJ and Boxing gyms all over NYC. Their techniques are tried and true and will keep you in great shape. Good luck to you...

For self-defense I would do JKD, JJJ, and FMA. If you want to learn how to fight as well then do boxing, muay thai, bjj and wrestling which are all part of the MMA formula.

If you're interested in self defense and getting in shape, I would recommend Krav Maga. The system is very smart and up to date. It's divided into two parts: Self Defense and Fighting. It uses reflexive responses as a starting point. The fighting is essentially MMA with lots of boxing, muay thai, and now they've added a ground game based in BJJ. They also have fitness classes. I've really seen some great things at the Krav Maga places that I've observed and have been very impressed with the quality of the studios, teachers, equipment, etc... It is organized and modern. No, I'm not affiliated with this system other than the fact that I know some instructors and have trained with them.

Other schools may be able to match the Krav Maga standard, you just have to really look into it. The thing I see is that many MMA schools are not concerned with self defense. There's a difference.

Thanks for the post. I see that FMA's are mentioned a lot here. What is it you guys like about them? Actually, I do know of a school or two that might work for me (not the best times but what can you do if you want to learn something, etc...).

I currently do FMA. FMA is known for weapon fighting mainly. They teach you everything from knife to stick fighting. Their footwork like in boxing is really good. As you advance you will also learn striking with your hands and feet as well.

I guess the only thing I am concerned about with FMA's is that I won't get enough empty hand work. I would love to take a few styles, but I have to pick one that I can get the most out of.

The good thing about FMAs is that their empty hand stuff is based off of the weapons stuff. If you train hard at the weapons the empty hand stuff comes very quickly.

I'd just go for a good teacher rather than any art.

By the way Ng Mui Kung Fu??? Do they mean Wing Chun?

What kind of self defense are you talking about? Winning a brawl down at the local watering hole, or 2 thugs coming down off there high and they want your money and they don't care how they're going to get it?(Oh, and they're both packing knives, and you have your wife and kids with you so you can't run away) I say that because you will always fight how you train. Sport MMA will not help you in the latter situation that I wrote. As well, some reality based fight schools based there fighting off of techniques. You know, they come at you at this angle and your body will atomatically do this, so do this to them...What if they come at you at an angle you haven't trained for? You'll be jarred in what to do and the attacker will have the upper hand.

I would suggest finding a system that made you be fluid, able to adapt to any situation and survive the outcome. Not dump a bunch of money and time in a school that fits your time slot and offers weak results. Or waste time learning a bunch of moves that you would not use in a 5-7 second altercation.

Just my 2 cents. I found a system that fits me and has provened to work in real life altercations. www.targetfocustraining.com However that's just me. (with my body type and social up bringing) What works for me might not work for you.
