Yeah, definetly a mixture of various styles it looks like,

Definetly some type of kali , escrima, some wing chun?

all combined into an effective system.

I am still not sure about the gun disarming though, has anybody ever used those in real life and lived to tell about it?

    with respect,

    Jiu fu

They are on the right track. They just have to get the attacker to continue to struggle even after being hit, or having some lock put on him. There were a few clips there were the bad guy got hit with the weakest of strikes, and just dropped. Not going to happen in real life.

The weapon defenses need some work. They didn't even bother clearing their body from the line of attack. Especially that one knife defense where he brings the knife across his center line...YIKES...slashed throat anyone?

I'd say about 60% or more of the moves displayed are dangerous and useless in a real situation especially with disarms and weapons related. the moves I seen are mainly WT related, and weapons are not really from FMA, rather from those 5 lesson self defence ex military man moves.

Sorry to reopen an old thread, but I felt I had something to add here.

What I am prepared to say right now is that Kombato is a personal defense systems, created in 1998 by brazilian martial artist Paulo Albuquerque.

Master Paulo is also a Kali Silat student under Tuhon Greg Alland, since 1986 and AFAIK the most graduated Kali practicioner in Latin America.

I am myself a kombato and kali student under Master Paulo. What I can say is that he is quite serious about the effectiveness of the moves, and that substantiated criticism is welcome.

I have already pointed this thread to him, and as soon as he has something to offer I will forward here.

          Now, regarding specific coments:
Jiu-Fu: Yes, kombato does draw from the fountain of knowledge. There are moves from several different martial arts. Bruce Lee was often quoted as saying "Keep what works, discard the rest". We follow that. Also Tuhon Greg likes to say that "there are two types of moves: those that work and those that don't".
So, boxing, BJJ, Muay thay, kali, judo, whatever works, may have a place in kombato.
Regarding the gun disarmings, there are success stories, but I am not acquainted with the details, so I won't comment. What I can say is that we are told to use those when absolutely screwed up, when death from the assailant is certain and all other means already failed.

Jeff and Oraenor, please keep in mind that this is a demo video, all those moves were coreographed, although a bit hurriedly, I would like to invite you to join a class, but distance may prevent this. However, rumour has it that Master Paulo is to travel to the US this year, maybe he has some demo plans in his head.

Edit: Youcan see new videos on Youtube

I guess I should add an introduction somewhere in the forums
Thanks for the nice words. I'll talk Master Paulo or one of the other instructors to join the forums.

Ah, she is Isadora, daughter to the nasty fat guy. By nasty I mean he is quite good and has a strong strike. Dora is quite good and fast. Beware of ladies that carries blades =]. She looks prettier before kicking your ass =D
And that long black haired girl is a former TKD practicioner, she was a kombato instructor too. Tatiana was her name, IIRC.
