  • trying to learn from a loss in sparring

I had a few Full contact sparring matches today and managed to lose one, cant stop trying to figure out how to correct where i went wrong and wondering if i could get some input. (unfortunatly i do not have footage of the match) my record was going pretty good when a guy large round the midrift (about 10-15kgs heavier than me) challenged me I accepted , as soon as we started the guy came running at me gloves waving towards my head and caught me off guard i kept my hands high dispite recieving a few to the head but couldnt manage to retaliate with any thing as he just kept running at me, (we wer on a field so there wasnt much of a boundary) my question is how best is it to stop an attack like that? and with somone quite a bit heavier than you? i was thinking the best thing is keeping my hands high and holding my ground nd managing to put some elbows on him until he backs off and then come foward with my own attack? any help will be much appreciated.

(ps: sorry if im in the wrong thread couldnt quite find one for it and just hoped this one would do)

Sounds like a good candidate for a hip throw or low thai kicks to the legs to slow him down. A properly done hip throw will put and end to that monkey business in a hurry.

Trying to meet someone's attack who is bigger than you head-on may not be the best tactic. Dick offered some pretty good advice on that aspect.

ETA if his hands are high up like you say try coming under his attacks and give him a shovel hook or knee to the gut.

          Ryan,

You might feel fear, but don't back down. Keep hunting him no matter how scared you feel - you overcome that barrier and meet him - but like Hardman and Brewer pointed out, make him move laterally by stepping/sliding sideways and just out of his reach and when he has to adjust, hit him upstairs.

          Did you use fakes?

Fake a jab (or throw a real one) at the body and then come right over the top at his chin. Mix it up. Fake or throw a strike upstairs and then quickly slam some thai kicks or knee kicks downstairs. If he bends over, drops his hand to try and grab your kick as it slams in, hit him upstairs again - move and keep setting up shots.

Attack aggressively, attack unpredictably and don't stop until he's down.

thankyou all for all the advice! its great ta have experienced people like yourselves to turn to.

Iv taken it all into account and am training harder and cant wait to spar him again and beat him. i think i got one or two jabs out before he charged at me but i think it was a bad round in general, my reasons being i wasnt ready for the attack and i guess not paying enough attention which didnt allow me to retaliate in anyway with a kick jab etc.

thankyou very much for the videos il watch them right after this post.

again thankyou all for the advice and taking time to help me out. it wont go to waste. ill be sure to keep you all informed.
