  • sambo for street defence?

what do you think about sambo?
i don't know much about it but i heard that Russian bodyguards use it and i know that i wouldn't mess with those guys, there are some hard fellas. does the art have any application for self defence, it so what are its characteristics, eg striking with the shin in MT or the tip of the boot in savate.

Sambo is a grappling art. It's good stuff and can sure get the job done if you know what you're doing...

I've put a few videos of SAMBO demonstrations up in a few places if you look for leglocks or combination techniques I'm sure you'll come across a few cool moves.

    ~Enjoy...

There are many types of Sambo, however unless you're talking about Combat Sambo or Special Sambo it isn't being used by Bodyguards. Think Judo crossed added to Japanese traditional Jujutsu with striking and grappling applications and you'll have a close idea of Sambo.

No it's Combat Sambo and its the Soviet take on the lessons learned by it's founders, under Kano. One of those men died rather than admit he trained under Kano btw so apparently they do like the distinction to be made.

I used more common arts to explain what Sambo was and you came back and said "thats what Combat Sambo is buddy. Minus the finger and wrist locks."

I pointed out that while it describes it to someone unfamiliar it IS different and one of the two men who founded Sambo (Vasili Oshchepkov) died rather than admit he trained under Kano what don't you get?

It depends on the variation and lineage you're talking about, some variations like the one developed by Viktor Spiridonov use more blending techniques and are more akin to Aikido although all Sambo has a component of Kano's art mixed with local folk wrestling styles indigenous to the area.
