The Gracie brothers form a circle with 20 people in their entourage, and make sure that even if there are knives, bats or chains present, the grappling stays fair and one on one. Its doesn't matter where the grappling is taking place: On the street, in the ring, on the beach, in a club, etc.
They make these claims because they have been able to dominate vale tudo contests in their country. And because vale tudo means "anything goes" in English, the Gracies like to exaggerate the way in which GJJ has been used.
That why they will take on a student who happens to be a SEAL. Then they will write that they teach the SEALs. They claim that they are the official combatives program for the US Army, but neglect to mention that there isn't such a thing. Their program is used, just like boxing and karate are, but none are exclusive or official. GJJ is used to bring out the competitive spirit in some soldiers, but not as some assassination tool for the battlefield.
They want money. Just like the MMA monkeys who call MMA "the next evolution" when all they did was add Gracie jujitsu to kickboxing. Its all marketing and bullshit.
The Gracie credo should read: Accosted by a knife? Hug it!
The MMA credo should read: We kickbox and grab asses on the floor. Period
And what's worse is that even though the Gracies introduced BJJ to America and most of the world, once American fighters studied it they had the nerve to say that the Gracies suck!
Talk about ungrateful fcuking pilgrims!
