I am an instructor in Urban Krav Maga under Stewart McGill and with the British combat association (Peter Consterdine & Geoff Thompson) and also the ISKA.

Urban Krav Maga draws its experience from its head coaches who have been instructors under 2 or 3 of the Krav maga organisations as well as having a wealth of experience ranging from BJJ, Muay Thai, Karate,Judo, wrestling etc

Below is the head instructors details -

Stewart McGill, Senior Instructor with the British Combat Association and Urban Krav Maga. Previously a 3rd Dan in Goju Ryu karate and civilian/Law Enforcement instructor with 2 separate Krav Maga organisations.

As well as having been an Instructor with the International Krav Maga Federation and Commando Krav Maga, I've trained with the Israel Krav Maga Association in Israel and continue to have a good relationship with David Kahn. This has given me a virtually unique experience across the various styles of Krav Maga. I continue to train in boxing and MMA.

”I was earmarked by my Goju Ryu instructor to take over the running of the club; he had been trained by Yamaguchi Hanshi who was trained by the famous Miyagi, founder of the style and one of the most revered figures in the history of the Okinawan/Japanese martial arts. Consequently, I'm proud of my lineage in this style; however, having trained for many years in this and other combat systems, I'd found nothing in which I truly believed until I began Krav Maga.

That's why I teach. People need no-frills, effective self–defence techniques that can be learned quickly and instinctively, are clearly applicable to real situations and that don't require levels of strength, fitness and flexibility to which only professional sports people can aspire.

Heres the info off one of the other head instructors Gershon -

Gershon Ben-Keren has been involved in the martial arts since the age of 8. Initially he studied Judo going on to gain a Black Belt (2nd Dan) in this system as well as several national titles (1990, 1992 & 1993). He also has a 1st Degree Black Belt in traditional Japanese Ju-Jutsu.

He started training in Krav Maga with the IKMF (International Krav Maga Federation) in the early-1990's under Marcos Lall - one of the highest ranked instructors teaching outside Israel - and eventually became an instructor himself under Eyal Yanilov (one of Imi Lichtenfelds - the founder/creator of the system - top black belts).

During his time with the IKMF he began to question the approach and direction that the system had taken and after spending some time with David Kahn (the IKMA - Israeli Krav Maga Association - representative for the U.S.A) travelled to Israel and took instruction under Haim Gidon and Yigal Abriv.

As well as training in Krav Maga he has also trained with other notable Israeli martial artists, such as Avi Nardia.

There are other head instructors with plenty of quality M.A experience but its late here in Ireland so i hope that gives you a better idea of what Urban Krav Maga is about?

          Thanks

          Paul

Sounds like a hell of a school. Those credentials are impressive to say the least.

If ever I have the good fortune to visit Ireland, I may pay your school a visit.

As an aside, personally how do you see Geoff Thompson's material compared to the Krav Maga of Haim Gidon/Eyal Yanilov compared to Moni Aizik's Commando Krav Maga?

What are some of the major distinctions you see between these different takes on combatives and personal protection and how do they blend together as taught by your school?

Sorry, those may be sort of inane questions, I am just interested in how these things mix up and how they compare to each other in terms of methodology/ideology and techniques?

                Hi Garland,

Geoff Thompson and Peter are the head guys at the British Combat association which license our Instructors and students.

Krav Maga asides i think Geoff and Peter brought fantastic street defense techniques to the Uk/ Ireland and indeed the world.

What makes UKM and Geoff Thompsons system similar is the the things like Geoffs animal day training which is similar to the UKM pressure tests only in UKM you have weapons to deal with also - the intensity is the same and the pressure.

Another similarity is the teaching of situation awareness and pre-emptive strikes which i think is vital knowledge for anyone looking to learn how to read situations and avoid / end trouble before it happens..

As for the differences between the Krav Maga organisations Urban Krav Maga with their experience have simplified some of the techniques that were found to be more low percentage moves. Basically taking the most effective techniques from each system adding it with more deeper ground work and striking styles like Muay Thai and you have got UKM.

The difference between UKM and CKM is that the head instructors experience is all legit and can be easily checked, UKM also do not make no outlandish claims of them using their system to teach special forces etc UKM do teach alot of law enforcement etc but do not use this as an advertising tool because they let the system speak for itself.

I do not know if this forum is pro CKM but i am sure you have all heard of the dark clouds over it and its claims, i am not hear to bad mouth any stsyems as its not my style but i am juSt pointing out my opinion ONE of the differenceS between CKm and UKM. Another quick point is that we do full contact free style sparring in UKM which is basically MMA sparring which you do not do in CKM. This was a great benefit to our club as now aswell as having graded UKM students we have also built an MMA team from it thanks to the hybrid style of krav,Muay Thai, Judo and BJJ etc which cross's over nicelY to MMA! (when you take out the weapons and NHB training hahaha)

Also google Urban Krav Maga as theres a few schools in the US

                thanks
