    What you should seriously do

    Hey SOLIDOPS,

My personal suggestions for learning some effective systems for self defense are:

    -Krav Maga

    OR

    -Muay Thai

Why do I suggest these two: they both have striking and grappling, I also feel that the techniques and concepts taught are powerful, and simple for self defense.

I'd confidently say that if you find a good instructor, in one of the 2 systems I mentioned and apply your self to it, in 6-12 months you'll already have a fairly decent fighting ability, but the room for improvement of course is endless.

I think the best thing for you to do is to try out a few classes from some styles you're interested in and see what you think of them. I think that way you can find something you like.

      what do you guys suggest?
I suggest you to train in combat forms that privilege OFFENSE rather than defense. I'd go for Muay Thai or Boxing and some grappling art as a support system. After having learned their basic delivery systems, I'd check for good seminars like those of Mick Coup - see here: C2: Core Combatives
Mick is a realist and knows a lot about combative psychology.
      Good luck.

Couldn't agree more. If you are always on the defensive you are going to get hurt. Better to take the other person out before they can hurt you. Offence finishes a fight.

I would recomend hybrid martial arts, as they are less likely to limit you to one way of thinking and viewing combat. I find it foolish to limit yourself to one style, but I'm just a noob. I don't know shit. lol.

Hybrid Vehicles & Hybrid Martial Arts. . .Works For Me!

Hybrids like Strategic Response Combatives (SRT), or Krav Maga, or Kapap, or Systema are all great training programs that teach you how to win on the street, and don't require extensive training to employ their techniques.

Boxing or Muay Thai take much training to proficiently employ the fists, elbows & knees (respectfully).

And, as stated in an earlier post, you have to take into consideration how much time you have and/or are willing to put into training?

"STREET COMBATIVES" are your best bet!
