And you will never kill anyone "legal" with out going to court.

I realize that this is an old post but wanted to add some thoughts here...

The maximum legal length of a knife will vary depending on the state and jurisdiction. However, many states but not all of them allow the carry of single-edged folding knives under 3 inches.

To be be clear, a knife is considered a lethal force tool and should not ever be deployed in any situation that doesn't warrant lethal force. There are many instructors out there that endorse the brandishing of a knife with hopes that they won't have to use it. However, this is something that should never be done. If you don't intend to use the knife, don't draw it. If you draw a knife only to brandish it, you might find yourself in worse trouble. You will be asked why you pulled a knife if you didn't feel it was a life-threatening situation. Also, it gives the attacker grounds to escalate and claim he was just defending himself.

So, to answer your question. Even if the use of a knife is legally justified there is a good chance you may end up in court. Even if you aren't brought up on charges because it was justified, you may face a civil suit. If the use of a knife is not justified, yes you will find yourself facing charges in court.
