Bowing is a sign of respect. Its used in everday life in Japan. Oh if you want to qoute animal behavior the exposing of the neck, rolling to the back, even the smile from primates is a sign of non hostility. The exposing of the hind quarters has many uses and it isnt really submissiveness.

I was not saying i was a samurai and yes with the fall of feudalism they are dead. I was showing a flaw in your reasoning with "bowing not for fighters." You completely fail in any understanding of Japanese culture though. Go read a book and learn something about it.

Is California part of Japan now? Culturally inappropriate is the term here.Why do you have to pretend.Bowing is serious stuff for alot of differant reasons.
Concentrate on being an american fighting man.We do not have to look any further then right here in the U.S.A .to find superior arts/training anymore.We are the best in the world.This is the 21st century now and the best have all came here and are now being born here.We have the superior fighting methods,training methods,fighters and coaches.We just need some fine tuning to get rid of the old fashioned stuff that doesn't contribute but actually hinders .

Ok, lets take your argument apart. First, how is it culturally inappropriate? America doesn't even have a culture in the traditional sense (its a combination of many cultures rituals and beliefs) to be offended by the practice of bowing. Second, how do you even relate religion to the act of bowing? Third, how is it useless? It could be given weight just by saying it preserves the origins of the art and in this case its Judo from Japan so they bow.

The initial question was "women's judo" and the post just got hijacked...In any case, all this discussion about bowing is pointless unless someone manages to make us believe that this is why the US is almost non-existent on the judo map worldwide. Thanks to Jimmy Pedro and to this new guy in UFC.

As for women's judo, it started off as not so interesting but then with the arrival of Tamura and before her, a champion who's almost forgotten Ingrid Berghmans who made a lasting difference into juji gatame
And today at the olympic and world championship levels, it has become as entertaining as male judo.

U.S.Judo has been hijacked by a bunch of moonies that think its some kind of spiritual exersize.Judo was invented in the 1880's.Gee, do you think its time to modernize the training methods.As far as the bowing it comes from Shinto religion ,just like everything in feudal Japan.If you want to pretend that you're Shinto or a Samurai or anything else just don't try to hide it behind organized sport..And you cant blame JimmyPedro for all of U.S.Judo failures, he just helps to contribute to the old fashioned classsical,mindset.

I will bet that the U.S.will again be HUMILIATED this summer at the Olympics.
We did not even place at the last one.So if I am wrong,What is the problem?

Biggest respect to Mr. Pedro, but I can't help remembering when I read all this stuff about him that he was hardly a world-beater when he wrestled for Brown University back in the day.
