  • WOW! This is a long thread. I'm new here. Maybe next time I won't start at the beginning. That way I wouldn't have to wade through pages and pages of discussions about what rights women should and shouldn't have. I thought this was supposed to be about a woman's ability to defend herself. It looks like we may be getting back on track.

A woman can be perfectly capable of defending herself. It is true that ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL, the bigger and stronger opponent will win. This is true in the animal kindom as well. However, if a woman has trained, it changes the equation--see other thread "The Violence Project"--very interesting study.

By the way, I don't think we should be talking about most women in general here. Most women aren't interested in self defense and want to have the protection of a big strong man (ie, mrniceguy's wife). Wouldn't it be great if a woman could walk down the street in safety knowing that if a thug attacked her some knight in shining armor would come to her rescue? Most women prefer to live in this world of illusion. This forum is not for them. However, there is a small minority of women who understand reality and know that there may be times when they need to defend themselves. Why bother talking about the Martha Stewarts and Miss Manners of the world here?

    • To Mulan

I have enjoyed reading many of your posts in this thread. You seem intelligent and have done your homework on a lot of things. However, you say you are taking Tai Chi primarily for the health benefits and hoping that the self defense will simply appear. This is a rather backwards approach, because it WORKS THE OTHER WAY AROUND! If you are not training for self defense, how can you hope to defend yourself? Yes, Tai Chi has health benefits, but what good will those do if some asshole rapes and murders you? Health benefits should not be your primary concern. Tai Chi is first and foremost a martial art. Leave the "airy-fairy" types of Tai Chi for "airy-fairy" types of people. You don't seem to fit in to that category.

      • Bigger stronger

I would like to point out that in the animal kingdom wolverines aren't quit as big and even considerably smaller than most of the predators in the regions they live in including bears and they tend to win alot because they have the weapons and ferociousness to defeat larger opponents

Congradulations! That's the exact type of thinking (or lack of) that kept women from voting, or being a part of the work force, or joining the military, or being able to own property......, Do you have any other pearls of wisdom hidden in there, like how Lincoln freeing the slaves was bad because it really hurt the economy. How about all that prime real estate that was given to the Native Americans, they really don't deserve it, do they.
Your entire post sounds like a politically correct version of hate speech. You can talk politely, but if what you say is sexist, it's still wrong.
If this wasn't your intention, than please repost, Yinboxer. It just seams to follow a train of thought whose time has long since come and gone!

Woah! I guess I should have made myself more clear. The point I was trying to make was that this is a forum on self defense, not a forum to debate women's rights. I believe our right to vote has been established in this country, despite Mrniceguy's longing for the "Good ole days when weemen staid barefut n preggnet!" I joined this forum hoping to find interesting things about women's self defense, not to listen to debates of chauvanist vs femi-nazi. That is all I am saying here. I do believe we need to move foreward instead of re-hashing old news. Yes, I do believe women should be more assertive in general, but in my experience, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make her drink, so to speak. We never seem to talk about men who don't train. Perhaps it is because they aren't really relevant to the discussion. There seems to be a lot of references to women who don't train, however.
BTW: I am a female, and since I am happily married, I don't need a date.

              • Thank you

Thank You, Yinboxer, for clarifing your position. I feel that the people who badmouth female training should take a long look at their own school and see where it's level of training and intensity is. All students, male and female, are a product of their school and training enviroment. And it was my fault to assume that you were male in the first place. Knowing that you are female takes the male (pig) spin off of it! I find it funny that most traditional schools work techniques that were developed by people (men) who were smaller and weaker than what females are today. Isn't the focus of the training on power through technique? I would also challenge anyone with a negative view of female ma's to come and check out my school. We run the gamit ( as with the males) of females training for everything from self defense and fitness to professional cage fighters! Open your minds, not your mouths!
                Mahalo, Jeremy

                • just to say

I would like to point out that there are women in the dojo I train in as well in fact my wife trains with me which gives me all around the clock access to someone who trains the same arts I do. Plus I never have to worry about someone attacking her because I feel sorry for the poor bastard with the "look a helpless women" mindset.

                  • To doubt a martial artist ability because of size or gender shows a complete lack of knowledge about the martial arts in the first place....since ignorance is bliss, they must be estatic.
