Yup, the PICKPOCKET is looking to remove the valuables from your person as discreetly as possible. The victim typically doesn't know anything is missing until the PICKPOCKET is long gone.

The MUGGER is going to use fear and intimidation to obtain said valuables. The smart mugger is after your money, not your life. If he kills the victim he will attract unwanted attention from the law.


It seems like your idea of "self-defense" starts with the assailant waving a gun or knife in your face. Any decent self defense program will teach you that 90 - 95% of these situations are avoidable. If it reaches that level then you F'ed up somewhere down the line.

I was not talking about self-defense in general. I was not giving a seminar on self-defense or writing a guide to self defense. I was talking about the act of mugging. I was not talking about what one can do to avoid getting mugged, instead I was talking about the act of mugging. Now what about that is so hard to understand?

well, you need to be more specific about what you are talking about. Mulie is talking about avoiding those last steps in a mugging that you are talking about. If you try to use what she said at that point in a mugging then yes, you are right, it won't work. There is not much that will work at that point since the mugger has closed distance and is holding a superior position.

Yep, and I would also clarify that I never said to use "petty ass shit." I pointed out examples of real situations that happened, more as an indication of certain criminal motivations than anything else. It was an extra step in the forming of an argument that, essentially, there are very few muggers (or pickpockets, or burglars, although these tend to be less violent and less likely to be confronted than muggers) who go out there with killing you or even hurting you as their primary intent. Their intention is to get you to give them money or valuables, which they accomplish through intimidation or force.

Violence is a means to an end, and resorted to when other options fail, it is not an end in itself (that is another class of criminals altogether). I do not see this as idealistic, it is a realistic assessment of the act of mugging (the whole point of which is to get money/valuables). Hurting or not hurting you would not be decided by any moral obligation a criminal feels, but based on the most efficient way to handle the situation and accomplish their goals - a large part of which is to not leave evidence or get caught. Yes, some muggers might rely on intimidation alone and not be prepared to back up their threats (a matter of statistical probability reconciled with criminal interviews), but since you never know what kind of person you're dealing with this should never be relied upon and never once did I suggest you should.

The best way to not get mugged is prevention (being aware, not making yourself a target). If something goes wrong, try to find a way to escape (which you should have been looking for in "aware" mode). If this fails and you have somebody pointing a gun or knife in your face, you simply give them whatever they want. If they don't leave you alone after that and there are no escape routes, you resort to fighting back and defending yourself by any means necessary. Me referring to criminals as neither super- or sub-human is again not some idealistic morality issue but plain fact that can be used to empower yourself (hard to fight against somebody you consider vastly superior to you) and to analyze the situation/motivation.
