  • Mean but cute!

    Any girl can do it!
yeah, we can prove that we are mean but cute...I'm a Karate coach... I'm only 19 years old and I'm encouraging all the girls in the world to get started.. It's not hard ... may be not... but every single thing needs us to be strong... take a deep breath and gaze hard.. It's a fact...If you are consetrating on a high punching bag which you want to kick... You'll kick it for sure 'cause you are looking at it! that's it ... so, what are you waiting for?
    Let kick ass!

        mean but cute

Very good advice! If I understand you correctly, you suggest that we set our sights on a goal and stay focussed, whether that is in combat or everyday life. In the art I train in, it's that apparent contradiction (mean but cute) that's exploited to the fullest. Or perhaps it's "cute but mean", like a beautiful tiger.

Your call to action is unfortunately heeded by only a few. How do we motivate more women to become involved in training in martial arts, aside from being good role models?

My class is about 2/3 men and 1/3 women, 25 people in all.

I wish we could get more women to train in the class, also more people in general would be good.

Back when I started training (1979) there were over 100 people in the class I took. Times have changed, not as many people train.

I have thought about offering my class at a health club to reach more people. We only charge $20 a month for adults and $10 a month for kids. I do not want to go commercial but the paradox is that if you do not charge a lot people do not think it is worth their time. I can't figure that out. Our people pay with effort, the money just covers the expenses...

              United Way

              Hagrid-
I used to be a director at a YWCA and I ran the martial arts programs--- we got a grant from the united way for $40,000.00 to teach low-income children and adults - targeting the hispanic population. The goal was to reduce stress in the lives of low-income and the homeless popultion. We had like 200 participants - including woman and children from the local battered woman's shelter and the boys and girls club, etc. It was awesome! It was a little hard at times to communicate , but we teamed with the Latin American Association and they helped us out!!! It made our program from small to huge and it was so cool to let people come for free... and they really came, too!!! When writing the grant we used info./stats talking about stress levels and how sports and fitness helps ...etc.... I will give you more info. if you like..!

                $$$

                $20 a month

Crap that really cheap, Id love to train there, thats very good value.

Think about this. A pack a day smoker spend about $70 a week on smokes. If they were to spend that money on training, MA etc they would be laughing.

                      wait till..........

REALITY hits home in a real situation. then that "mean but cute" attitude will go right out the door, and a more practical and serious approach to training for women will ensue.

                      Many respects,,Lightning&Earth

                            Starting out

I have been taking martial arts for about 13 years, and was a police officer for 2 years. I friend of mine who works with the battered women's shelter here came to me and asked if I could help with a class in women's self defense. She had a redman suit and said that we could use one of the big rooms they have there twice a week. She said she didn't want to teach anything too advanced but wanted to get them out of their shell so to speak. There are about 15 women in the class ages 17 to 46. The first 2 classes went well. teaching these ladies how to avoid trouble and break holds. Any suggestions on where to go from here?
