Nurse Strangles Intruder With Bare Hands

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

September 08,2006 | PORTLAND, Ore. -- A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size -- 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds -- may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911. "You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

I think I'll drop BJJ and just gain more weight.

Seriously, you've got to give this lady major props. Her size "may have given her an advantage," but I don't think very many women (or men) her size would have the guts, strength and dexterity to choke out an armed assailant. Plus, the intruder was not a small man (at 180 lbs) and judging from his criminal record was no stranger to violence. You wonder whether she had any training -- presumably not, or the article would have said so.

Not just choke out, keep holding on until he dies. Not many have the determination and strength of purpose to do that.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. How long do you think she held on for? And what was the specific cause of death -- asphyxiation, prolonged interruption of blood flow to the brain, or trauma to the windpipe? How quickly, for example, would an RNC or other blood choke become fatal?

I do not mean to suggest any fault on her part for holding on too long: she must have been hopped up on adrenaline and scared as hell, and no one with any sense is going to release an armed assailant until that person is clearly incapacitated. Anyway, the police and prosecutors appear to be satisfied that the choke was justifiable self-defense. I'm just (morbidly) curious.

          Draw your own conclusions.

          1. A decently sized, experienced criminal with a violent background attacked a woman with a hammer.

          2. Something happened in between.

          3. The criminal got choked out.

There's an archive of another event that happened at a drive through about a year ago, but the details were more obvious.

          1. An older army guy was trying to make up his mind at a drive through.

          2. A younger, larger, stronger and drunk young guy (HS Football Defensive lineman) pulled up behind him, honked at him, threw a beer bottle at his car. Words were exchanged. Young guy gets out of his car to escalate.

          3. Young guy slams older army guy not once; but twice into the concrete...

          4. Young guy dies from getting choked out.

jesus! I'm scared of nurses now!

Good for her, but I'm wondering if there wasn't a way both of the people in the room could have survuved? Like, choking him until he passes out and then tieing him up?

You're an older woman. An armed criminal has broken into your home. Why in the world would you put yourself at any risk whatsoever to make him safer?

                  Exactly so.

To take it one step further; Why would we, as a society, particularly want that guy to survive? So he can maybe go to jail for a year and then break into my mom's house next?
You pretty much tear up your citizenship card when you start breaking into houses and attacking ladies as far as I'm concerned.

Follow up: It looks like he was a hitman hired by her husband

Intruder strangled by nurse: a hit man?
Plot - Police say the estranged husband of Susan Kuhnhausen hired Edward Haffey to kill her
                    Friday, September 15, 2006
                    MAXINE BERNSTEIN
Michael James Kuhnhausen Sr. first hired Edward Dalton Haffey to mop up the mess at Fantasy Adult Video.

Police say he then hired Haffey, a convicted felon with a long criminal history, to kill his wife.

Kuhnhausen, the estranged husband of the emergency room nurse who strangled an intruder in her Southeast Portland home last week, was charged early Thursday with criminal conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.

Detectives say Michael Kuhnhausen, 58, helped disarm the security alarm at the Southeast Alder Street home earlier in the day and let Haffey in. Haffey waited with yellow rubber gloves and a claw hammer for at least four hours until Susan Kuhnhausen arrived home from work.
Damn, but life is wierd sometimes.

Hell yea! I've always said you GIVE UP your rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness when you forcefully take those away from someone else.
