    Glass ceiling? By shesulsa - Fri, 20 Oct 2006 18:58:50 GMT

    =========

    I want to open a frank conversation here about the limited number of women who reach higher rank and would like to ask the women here ... how far do you intend to go? How long will you stay in martial arts?

    It seems there are still an awful lot of men in charge of systems, on the lineage charts ... yet I meet a lot of female black belts and it seems they tire and move on towards nurturing the people in their lives or focusing on careers again, etcetera, while our male counterparts continue on, forfeiting time with their loved ones and family to carry the torch forward.

    How important is it for you to carry on, not just for being female, but a sense of legacy you may or may not have and how will your gender play a part in this?

    Given that not as many women participate in MA as men...

    In our TKD organisation we have a number of high ranking women. School owners/instructor/judges.

    What keeps women from making huge strides is partly nature - after all, Daddy doesn't have to miss a beat for the next 9 plus month, the very nature of what we do limits the participation of an expecting woman tremendously! And the female body undergoes many changes throughout a life time, most are not favorably to a physical occupation.

    And last, even now, in the 21st century, a woman's work is never done. Most still have to shoulder the majority of mundaine chores like cooking, cleaning, washing and child care. Women are more often expected to give up what ever they where doing in favor of the family. And anything that takes a serious commitment in terms of time and money cannot be achieved if you have no support from home.
