Female role figures By Taekwondo_gal06 - Sun, 04 Mar 2007 01:16:15 GMT

It is well known that few clubs have female instructors as role models for women to enter the art, and I was wondering how many here joined because there was a female MAist inside the club or outside? Did you have to rough it out with the boys? And if there were more female instructors would more girls join?
When I first started martial arts I was in an all boy class, but I perservered and was too stubborn to feel isolated and unfeminine.
My TKD class was all girls, 6 students with a female third dan instructor, which I didn't realise was very rare. In our class the guys who joined only stayed briefly before leaving. They felt intimidated by the 'girl club' mentality like women usually are in MA.
TKD is amazing for me because there are soo many female rolemodels compared to other arts. I do ITF and we use no padding or protection in sparring and yet there are guys and gals going at it with focused skill and power. Its really great. I love to see the little girl white belts outnumber the little boys sometimes, it means that those who stick at it will create even more rolemodels for future girls.
I actually want to stick at it and be an instructor too, it'd be great to show girls it isn't just a guy thing.
