which is most suited ma for female like me? By eirel - Mon, 21 May 2007 00:01:44 GMT

    =========

Hi...just wanted to get opinions for which ma is best suited for a female w/smaller frame... im only about 5 ft and 90 something lbs...i know size matters esp in sparring...im not afraid to get bruises and put in the work...and actually like to bulk up more...i wont be able to go up against 6'2 guys...just wondering which ma to look into that i can learn or are they all too difficult/tough?

Well, I do TaeKwonDo. While hight equals reach, there are ways to work around that with speed. One of my instructors is about 5f tall (or short) she is a bit more substantial than 90lbs though, but she moves quick and kicks butt!

I am sure other style compare...besides, for the sports aspect you would be pared with a person similar in size...

bjj inmop is great for women.

i dont know how often a woman has to box or trade blows with a grown man, she is more likely to be grabbed and overpowered or pinned against something. this is were bjj comes in.

the elbow joint of a man who is 6'2 is no match against the entire body power of even a midget.

KEMPO,KEMPO,KEMPO......you don't need to be big or strong, just fast.....I'm the smallest adult male at my school, 5'8" 165 LBS. I can hold my own against the bigger, younger guys. Something in the milk I think.......Bovine growth hormone maybe? 18 year old kids 6'2" 230lbs, what the f*** is that all about?

LOL We have a couple of kids, one is not even 14 yet and he is as big as a house...not very nice to spar, since his brain has not caught up with his body yet and he has o concept of his strength, good kid though, and he is the second one - that I know off...

What cracks me up is their lack of fundamental coordination.

I would say that Wing Chun kung fu, BJJ or Kempo would be good for you

In my experience, female kickboxers, TKD practitioners etc are not bad, but the moves they do are not good for self defence

I am assuming that when a woman gets attacked, she will be grabbed by a bigger, stronger opponent. It is possible with Muay Thai to get very powerful, but it will be hard to pull off against the bigger guy.

BJJ trained correctly should work on anyone, no matter their size. The same with wing chun. At Kamon we have numerous women who can kick ass.

That's what it's like at my school too. A lot of the adult students (and some instructors) are police, corrections officers, or firefighters.

Internal arts are asome for females as they dont require any huge amount of size, strength, or whatever as they work on technique, where to hit, and all the other importants often forgot or considered of less use in some other MAs... But if you aint looking for an internal art, thats great, my sister is only 5'1 or somthing and she did Southern style praying mantis Gung fu, which is an incredibly demanding style, yet through strong willpower and determination she was better than most guys there, and better than ALL the other girls there, she came first place in a few gradings and things too... Just remember it isnt really which art your doing, its more on how hard and smart you train in the art of choice... Just choose which ever art you think fits your own personal way, or whichervber art makes the most sence to you and if you dont know much about what arts are what then just look around on the internet, thats what its there for. Anyway I have noooo idea if this was any help to you or not but hopefully it is.

Hang in there Paige, it's to our advantage to train against bigger people.

Ugh! you people! Cant you see BJJ is crap? Blergh... Its rare to see somone actually *good* at BJJ. For a female it is also not the greatest art.

Initial thoughts....you want to use every weapon on your natural body and a few extra ones, like knives and blunt objects.

Have you considered Jeet kune do?

Schools vary according to the instructors experience, but more than likely you will find an instructor/s who are skilled in an emptyhanded art ( wingchun, muaythai, combat wrestling etc) and in a weapon art (kali, silat, arnis etc.)

                              Best of luck.
