Why no women in the UFC (or equivalent)? By Jonathan - Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:44:12 GMT
=========
Got into a short discussion on this with a classmate; she had said that perhaps the biggest reason would be because people would be watching it from the viewpoint of the spectacle of a 'cat fight'; I think I understand what she means.
However, of the women I've seen practice the MMA, they are dedicated, hard-working, and no-nonsense when they're out there. I know there have been a few female fighters in some organization (the name escapes me now).
But why is it the UFC can't induct a women's 'branch' of the organization, and why can't we expect people to watch such matches while concentrating on the virtues of the fighter's skill, rather than their gender?
I know it took a while for women's boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling to take off... but with those 'forefather' arts/styles, I'd think the UFC or equivalent would be a natural (and easier) progression.
Thoughts?
* Also, mods: I wasn't sure if this should go in the MMA forum, or this one... please move if I have it in the wrong spot, thanks!
EDIT: Bodog. I think that's the name of the organization I was trying to think of. Not sure how widely known it is *shrug*.
