    ACL injury By blackbeltbabe - 05-02-2010 09:22 PM

    =========

    Hey,

    I was just wondering if any female martial artists have torn their ACL and gone through reconstruction surgery. I am in my early twenties, teach karate for a living and recently found out I have a torn acl in my right knee.

    I have been doing a lot of research and I discovered that young females are the ones who usually sustain this injury. I have found tons of posts from athletes, but they did different sports i.e. soccer, skiing, basketball, etc. I want to know from a karate standpoint all the different questions I have.

    It seems to me people don't realize how physically demanding this sport can be. Doctors even underestimate how much beating the body takes. I guess what I really want to hear is your story and how if affected your ability to do martial arts. Things like how you got injured, what type of graft you used for your surgery, what was your rehab like and how much time did it take for you to return to "normal" if you ever did would be helpful as well.

    As of right now I have going to have surgery by the end of this month and they're talking about using the patellar tendon to rebuild my acl. The doctor was against hamstring especially since karate takes so much hamstring strength and flexibility.

    Thanks!
