Jaelyn, we need more ladies like yourself to promote boxing and kickboxing. After a few bouts, you would probably make a good role model for the young ladies who have the interest but who get talked out of doing it from other girls.

Do you follow pro-kickboxing? Hear of Kathy Long? She weighs 136 and benches like 270. She frequently KOs cruiser weight sparring partners (guys weighing 188-197). That's power.

Tom Yum- I haven't watched any matches lately. I have a website and message board for Women who want to lose weight and live life well. So I'm always busy with that. I try to inspire Women to take control of their lives and to be good to their heart, mind, and soul. I also write alot in my spare time. I'm currently working on an auto biography of my life.
But I do watch Womens or Mens kickboxing or boxing, whenever I can. I like boxing alot. Kathy Long sounds familiar. I will look her up on the net. Thanks for the info on that.
I have always wanted to get back into martial arts. But its tough when you have a family to look after. Right now I'm concentrating on getting healthy physically. I am also looking into starting a Womens Walking group in my home town. My hope is to get a large group together and pick up trash along the streets. To help clean up the city and get exercise all in one.
These are my Dreams. I hope to accomplish.

Some other femal boxers/kickboxers that come to mind (not sure if they are spelled right)

Laila Ali (daughter of Muhammed Ali, top ranked fighter)
Angela Rijker (Top ranked kickboxer; originally from Europe)
Angela Rivera (Top ranked Thaiboxer; fights out of Vegas I think)

These ladies have tremendous striking power and are awesome to watch in the ring.

        Some interesting fighters in general:

Manson Gibson- An american kick boxer who competes in Thailand and has won many bouts; his fighting style is unorthodox; he throws a lot of spinning backfists, spin kicks, side kicks and fancy moves.

Sakuraba - Top contender in mixed martial arts from Japan. He jumps on people when they are on the ground, kicks them in the rear and then does all the standard kickboxing/grappling.

Royce Gracie - Famous for his challenge matches in the early 90's. Made brazilian style jiujitsu famous by beating challengers whose backgrounds include professional boxing, traditional karate, kickboxing and wrestling. Fought against lean fighters who outweighed him by 90 pounds and submitted them.

Tank Abbot - Tough guy street fighter with a background in boxing and wrestling. Other than collegiate wrestling and boxing classes,he has no traditional martial arts. This guy has knocked the living daylights out of expert karate practicioners. He has ko'd 400+ pound guys with his ham like fists, but his stamina and ground fighting are suspect.

Re: Kathy Long. Burt Richardson spent some time working with her in the '90s. He said that she did some pretty intense conditioning workouts and spoke quite highly of her in general. For example, she would run stairs with a 200 lb. guy on her back. So, you might want to follow-up with him for more details.

That is intense conditioning. I think my back would snap if I tried that! lol!

It's good to hear things like that - it keeps me motivated.

Going back to my dislike of how "Tae-bo" crap is marketed, have a look at this link:

I haven't looked at the contents of the book, but it seems like these things will give women a false sense of security.

Mind you, the girl on the cover looks rather nice on it! I wonder if she got that body from doing kickboxing??

Tom Yum-I'm familiar with most of the fighters you mentioned.
I have also watched the UFC tapes. And I admired Tank and Gracie. Gracie is an amazing grapler and submission artist. It goes to show, no matter how little the contender they can still be a worthy opponent.

Another person I'm impressed with is Lucia Rijker. I had her up for a seminar about six or seven years ago and thought her footwork, timing, power and skill as a teacher were superb.

I also thought that she was a very good sport. She spoke graciously, encouragingly and kindly of fighters, including men, that she had fought and defeated and gave positive suggestions as to how they might outdo their previous achievements in the ring. I would highly recommend her as a boxing coach to anybody, man or woman. Um, watch out for her shovel hook...she can take most men down or out with it.

Just to mention something you guys were talking about earlier, about women (or whoever) being taight stuff which doesn't really apply, or wouldn't help them in a self defense situation.
My instructor splits us up, teaches us different stuff etcetera, but most importantly (to my mind) is the fact that he teaches us what to do in a self defense situation. It's not all punching, kicking or whatever. He's like, this person means you harm. Be as nasty as you can. So we get taught what to do if a guy grabs you in different ways, or is holding you. Lots of nasty little tricks (they hurt) that a woman, or someone smaller could do to make a guy let them go when a punch or something similar really wouldn't be effective.

And on another note, about women not training as hard as guys, I agree it's just the person. I know girls who train with me and the flinch when I hit the pads, but there's one women who is scarier than any of the guys to train with (holding any type of pad) because she's fast, powerful and committed. You know she wouldn't hesitate to hurt you, and you know she could. It's freaky sometimes. And she's pretty, feminine, all that. Not especially bulky or anything. But I'd be willing to bet she could whoop 70 percent of the guys I know. (Then again, I don't get out much - don't know that many people... LOL)

Since there are a few "younger" ladies posting here now, I'd like to give you a few things to think about:

                      1. 50% of rapes occur to 15-19 year olds. The main reason is that women of this age group have not yet had sufficient experience in dealing with confrontation on a VERBAL level, and also do not have enough experience at leaving a situation BEFORE things get physical. This is not a slam, but rather food for thought. Younger women often get too deep into a potentially dangerous situation without setting up their "boundaries" and "limits" as to what type(s) of behavior they will tolerate. This includes how much touching, etc. a strange guy can do before they begin the process of defense. You need to make decisions about when you will enforce your safety BEFORE an event, not during!

                      2. Think about using verbal tricks to confuse and slow down a potential "date rapist" (your greatest threat at your age). For instance, when he gets a little too "friendly", excuse yourself to use the bathroom. This is a non-challenging way to leave the immediate area. If you push him away and shout "NO!", you are issuing him a challenge to convince you to say "YES!". This is the fundamental trigger to date rape. He will then begin the process of convincing you, whether by verbal or physical means. You should learn not to let things go this far!

                      3. Be sure you practice your physical "nasty" techniques against a non-compliant attacker. Hopefully, he will be wearing protective gear so that you can go all-out in your strikes. This way, you'll know exactly how hard you can hit WHEN YOU'RE OFF BALANCE, ETC. Your ability to hit pads, etc. does not accurately reflect your ability to hurt an attacker while you in a disadvantaged position.

TOO MANY SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAMS DO NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS CREATED BY REALISTIC MOTION IN AN ATTACK. AN ATTACKER DOES NOT GRAB YOU AND THEN FREEZE! HE WILL USE HIS SIZE AND STRENGTH TO MOVE YOU AROUND IN AN ATTEMPT TO LIMIT YOUR ABILITY TO FIGHT BACK. HE WILL WHIP YOU BACK AND FORTH, ETC., SO BE PREPARED FOR THIS. GIVE IT A TRY DURING YOUR NEXT TRAINING SESSION, AND EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES!

I'll be glad to discuss this further if there is interest.

                      Lee

No doubt that some women can hurt a man. I've sparred women with power. I'm glad that we don't go all out, because they can put alot of hurt on a man. Some guys will never believe this until they step in the ring with the right person.

I made a point though that boxing/kickboxing is frowned upon by women in general (except those doing it).

wow you guys been busy sense i went on vacation.

i haven'nt really been doin martial arts lately manly because i don't have my license. i'm goin to join thai kickboxing like i mentioned earlier this summer. so lately ive been just weight lifting. and when i went weight lifting i noticed that their were only like 2 girls and about 30 men 1 worked there. it just reminded me how lazy women are in general. then i would go back to my resort and watch mtv. a show about balimmia and obese people. it just reminded me how sick some people are. mostly women. i used to think that women were misinformed about nutrition. but no they are just lazy about exercise. how i prove this will be from my family.

5 of my family members are obese:
                          sister-eats like crazy
                          sister-eats like crazy
                          brother-eats like crazy
                          step mother-eats like crazy
                          dad-smokes and drinks

one sister was balimmic at one time throwing up and stuff
she has a feancee now and he works out with me now and me and him were tryin to convince my normal-non obese sister to start exercising with us because she was starting to gain some pounds. first time she did. the rest of the week she didn't went we did. we got up at 7 in the morning just so we didn't miss one workout. ok mabye it was to early for her. when we came back that night. she still didn't want to do it.

main point 95% of women out there are lazy and thats why they become obese, balimmic, and so on.

                          women do something!!!!!!!!!!!

women can handle a lot more pain than men (to allow them to give birth)

                              this puzzles me:

women have more resistance to pain and yet. they they cry easily and make a big deal out of getting hurt

i put this down to 3 reasons:

little girls are told that they are weak and get used to the idea

women are more likely to cry because they are more emotional

women dont get exposed to physical pain enough nowadays

                              PS

men have better spacial reasoning than women (helps with technique)

men are stronger than women (even if they are the same weight)

men are more aggressive than women

men are keener to fight than women

a woman can TRY as hard as she wants. she still wont be as good as the average man

It depends. Go spar against a decent amateur/prof female fighter and you will see that they can fight intelligently and hit with power. I will agree that these women probably make up less than 5% of the female population, but it shows womens' potential when they are not caddy or superficial.
