  • best form?

I took karate for two years when I was a kid and I'd really like to get into it again. The problem...there are so many forms and to me a lot of them sound a lot alike. I want a form that allows sparing (surprisingly I've found some which don't allow it) but I don't want a school where you have full on battles with other people. I would really like something where I could learn skills that would be useful if I ever was in the situation where I would need to defend myself.

    thx.

Kyokushin karate has hard contact sparring and would probably be one of the more effective styles of karate

If you are looking for realistic self defense, then I would point you far away from any of the Karates.

But if you must, then Kyokushin and Shotokan I hear are quite good.
