There's no point in arguing it's obvious what the opinion is on the subject. There could be any manner of dangerous debris on the ground.

I can't believe some people are still pushing this silly-ass notion that not wanting to go to the ground means you won't end up there, or that if that is where you have the greatest advantage in a given situation you shouldn't take it just in case there's something on the ground.

It is silly to think that just cause you don't want to you won't. Everyone seems to forget that the other guy/guys in the fight have say so in what happens too.

Nobody said Don't go to the ground just because there may be stuff there as the only reason.

In a real fight not a ring fight there are a plethora of realistic and factual reasons that the ground is not your friend. people have covered them extensively in other threads.

In the Book of Five Rings Musashi advocates not having a favorite weapon, I feel this applies to how you fight as well. You shouldn't have a preference to what you use and how you use it. Fighting is conceptual no matter how you look at it. No one can predict what the opponent will do so you must train to be flexible.

            Overly categorical.

There may be circumstances where the ground IS your best friend.

I agree, when it's under my feet.

Yep like when you bounce the other guy off it with a Judo throw.

It certainly adds that proverbial third dimension to a standing game, eh?

there's nothing like hitting a guy with the ground.

Judo throws especially are very likely to involve you going to the ground as well. If you want to throw someone hard enough to hurt them you can't be afraid of the ground yourself.

Slamming someone onto the hard ground takes the fight out of a lot of people. Not everyone, but a lot...

That's true but I'm not a big fan of suicide throws. I've seen Judo properly done and people thrown very hard to the ground. I agree that some ground fighting in your tool box is an excellent idea. And you shouldn't be afraid if the fight goes to the ground.

However most bipedal species maneuver better in an upright position.

Judo is not 'improperly done' when the thrower goes to the ground as well.
