I'd prefer to be the one countering. I have a pretty good pancake and I've got a couple tricks up my sleeve for defending single legs, especially if they're crappy shots.

so does everybody else.
being on the attacking side shows your the aggressor

So what if he's the aggressor? There are more than one kind of wrestlers. Some of the best wrestlers I knew were Counter-Wrestlers. You can be the aggressor but if I'm perfectly aware that you're going to take that shot and I"m waiting for it, my odds of countering it are pretty high. Even if you do manage to shoot in and get a decent hold of my legs, I'm confident enough in my abilities to counter with a Switch or Whizzer or swep you.
The only time "showing you're the aggressor" helps is if it goes to a decision in a BJJ tournament. In wrestling they have up to double overtime and it still doesn't involve anything along the lines of being judged by who's more aggressive.
