  • Question for Sifu Burton

I live in Jordan(Middle East) and to summarise my situation, there are not many martial arts instructors who are actually "good", I want to learn JKD but I don't think anyone here teaches JKD, thats my basic problem. Are instructional videos a good way of learning, for a total beginner?

I found a BJJ school here, the guy that teaches there used to train with one of the gracies in brazil, I'm thinking about joining that but I really want to learn JKD, what solutions do I have?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Blitz,
Thanks for writing. I have heard that Jordan is a very beautiful place. I developed our distance learning program for people who are in your situation. You want to learn, but you don't have a good instructor nearby to learn from. In your case, you can become part of our program, get the DVDs, and then train the material on your own. We have had great success with this program, and I know that anyone who is devoted to practicing can develop very good skills. I would also encourage you to train in BJJ, but remember that when you add strikes, along with hits to the eyes, throat, and groin, the game changes dramatically. If you have further questions, please e-mail through our website at www.jkdunlimited.com. Also, check out the Performance Group Program. Aloha!

Thank you alot for your response. Ok I want to get some DVDs, but i don't know what to start with, anything in particular you would recommend to a total beginner? I want to learn strikes and kicks basically then I'd like to learn the rest. And by the way I didn't mention this but we have a great instructor who teaches wing chun/Kali/arnis/escrima, he learned for 23 years in south east asia. However, I don't like traditional wing chun because I like to learn straight to the point and not be lost for a long time, I took kali for some time but I guess I still like using punching/kicking which is why i stopped. Any comments about that that you would like to add?

      Thanks for your time

I suggest that you invest in the Science of the Fight series, along with the Choke Em Out series. When you buy both at the same time they are less expensive. These DVDs will keep you busy for a long time! You will have basic, intermediate, and advanced techniques and training methods, along with an overview of the philosophy of a complete fighter. I know that you will be very happy with them. Enjoy your training, and let me know if you have questions. Aloha!

You can get the DVDs through my website at www.jkdunlimited.com. You will be able to have them mailed to you in Australia, no problem. I am working on developing instructors in Australia. I would love to be able to offer JKDU to your entire country. Aloha!
