  • Hi, I watch UFC now I want to become a fighter!

It is as simple as that. I first saw MMA in the form of UFC like 3-4 years ago when I was 13-14. I loved it. I have since drifted from watching it because the PPVs are expensive and I don't go to video stores or anything. Anyway, I am sick of what I am doing right now which is nothing. I work at Steak n' Shake and do very well, I am the best grill operator at my store or near that, I like that job because of the competion to be the best. Anyway, that takes lots of time out of my days. That and my girlfriend.

Now though, I need to first start planning my training regimen. I suck a lot at cardiovasucal and I get winded easily. Even though I am like 145lbs and like 5'11". Anyway, it doesn't matter how you are built if you don't train. Fat guys have more energy than me. It sucks. But I will start running really soon. You guys got any tips for that? I will just drink lots. I am not sure how long each day I should run or anything though.

After that, I will start weight lifting once school gets back in to session here in like 3 weeks. We get a brand new weight lifting room as well. Anyway, also, I will join wrestling this year. Never been in any kind of disipline or anything so I should be not familiar at all. But in my mind wrestling is one of the best things to start out with.

Anyway, I just want to gain lots of mass and be like over 200lbs and still be in really good physical condition. I want to be like Tito Ortiz or Chuck Liddell or someone like that. Anyway, I hope my asperations never burn out. But my physical ones never will because I like sports in general and not being able to do them because not enough energy angers me.

Anyway, I will hang at these forums for as long as they can provide me with knowledge.

Run every 2nd day, pace yourself, and try going a little bit further each time. Your cardio will improve rapidly.

Do something, Ryan. Just get up and start. The bigges objection I've heard about starting something (anything) is:

"I don't have the patience to do it, because I won't be good right away!"

This is a no brainer for people who do 'something'.

You seem kind of young (not that I'm old). You won't naturally fill out until you reach about 23-24...and if you let yourself go, you could fill out for a lifetime... lol.

Join the wrestling team, train hard and try to learn something new every day. In the mean time, get fit before you start trying to build strength. Strength is good, but if you can't fire your muscles for an extended amount of time, you'll get eaten by smaller more conditioned wrestlers.

I'm relatively new to wrestling as well, but come from a few years of other ring sports.

So, you want to be a UFC fighter.... My son recently started watching those UFC DVD's... Guess what? HE WANTS TO BE A FIGHTER TOO! So, you start your training son. You work on that cardio. Because my boy is already in shape and has a year of combat grappling under his belt. He's training to eliminate guys like you.

You better start training right now!!

Thanks for replying to my post. Yes, now that I have the idea of what is more important it will guide me better. I just plan to start running down my roads in the back country sides. I just hope I don't run to far and not be able to return! What do you guys recommend for drinking? Should I just drink some Gatorade before, and then about in the middle of the run, and at the end? Also, would my basketball shoes be good enough for running like this? Or should I get some actual running shoes? How do I know if I am about to kill over or something like that as well? I definetly will carry a cell phone then. I just hope it isn't to much of a problem in my busy life. I work 4pm-12pm and then get up at like 11:30am or sometimes later than that. My free time is between when I get up and 2:30pm. So the other question is when should I get up and still have enough to finish the day and in to like 1am? I feel like waking up at 2pm a lot of days, and I do. But that is probley just lazynes.

            Hey Ryan,
Well the obvious would be to join a boxing gym. That along with the wrestling will be a great start, not to mention the conditioning will come as well.
            Where to start?
THINGS TO BUY:Running shoes, jump rope, squeeze ball. If possible buy a medecine ball (12 - 15 lbs.)
REST:If you get of work at 12:00, giving you 1 1/2 hrs. to get home, wash up, and relax, that will put you in bed at 1:30. If you get up at 10:30, That will give you 9 hrs. of sleep.
TRAINING:Start off with running about 3 times a week. Start on 30 min. runs, After that, add 5 min.to your runs every 3 weeks. Do that until you are running for about 1 - 1 1/2 hours comfortably.
H2O:Water, water, and water is the best. I have some triathelete friends that drink gatorade when they train or race, but they dilute it with water (50 % water - 50 % gatorade). They tell me that if is not diluted, to much gatorade will give you a bad stomach ache.
WEBSITES:There are millions of websites that will help you. May I suggest, www.grapplersgym.com. Go to the training section. I recommend the jump rope cardio routine, HOC training, and medecine ball drills.. It's all good!
FAMILY AND FRIENDS: You must balance your relationships with your training. If possible, work out with them. Always have fun and mix it up. When you run, look around and enjoy it (when I run, I get to see deers). Instead of running, go swimming with your girlfriend, or go to the gym with your dad. My Muay Thai Instructor is my GRANDMOTHER! Not really, but you get the picture.
NEVER QUIT! From experience I can tell you that you will have people cheering for you and some will laugh at your efforts. It dosn't matter! Take the possitive and feed of it! Forget the negative! I live by this: Find something you love to do, do it, and don't care about what ANYONE thinks or says! You may not get there as soon as you want, but if you never quit, YOU WILL GET THERE!
JUST IN CASE: We are working on our website. On it we are going to have a section on training tips; as soon as we get it up I will let you know.
GOOD LUCK:I hope this helps some.
THE FUTURE: We will look for you in about 4 - 6 years when you will be fighting in the UFC for the Championship Belt.

Nice advice lopezma! Hey are there any websites you guys know of that have like tutorials on fighting moves? For example a site with like how to do a knee bar or how to do armbars and things of that nature. I have looked but a lot of sites are just there to sell something. There are still a lot of submissions I don't know exactly how they work such as a triangle choke and kimora (sp?). Also it would be cool to have tutorials on take downs and striking and stuff to.

If you are gonna join the wrestling team, you should be working on getting in shape and nothing else. You will see what I mean. Don't try to learn the world in one gulp. Take it as it comes.

Not probably, that is laziness. I think you biggest problem is going to be disipline, without it you might as well not start. It takes alot of disipline to be good in sports especially combat sports. You think that you have a busy scheduled ..let's looK:

                  Work: 4pm-12am (8hours)
travel to work: ~2hrs round trip
                  pre/post work activities: ~2 hour
                  Sub total 12 hours

                  Sleep: 2am- 2pm (12 hrs)

DAMN, that is entirely TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much sleep!!!

You are going to have to make major changes to your habits if you want any success, infact you have to make major changes if you want mediocrity

The last couple of days I have been waking at 8am with out trouble at all. I have been going to sleep at like 1am. So I have seen how it is possible to sleep like for 7-8 hours and still be good for the day. I am beggining my running tomorrow.

Also today I bought this magazine called Grappling. So far it is really good. It has lots of good articles about MMA. It has tutorials for moves as well. Yes though, I can't wait to start the training.
