  • Saying Hello from Orange County, CA

    Hello,

Let's see, a little about myself. Before moving down to Orange County, CA a few years ago I used to train in a school that taught an eclectic mix of four styles: bok fu, kenpo, tae kwon do and kickboxing. I trained there for three and half to four years before I hurt my back and had to take some time off, during which I took a job that required me to move to Southern California.

I've been out of the martial arts scene for a while now and I'm looking to try to get back into it again, mainly for the exercise but also because I like the discipline and stress relief I get from it as well. I've tried a couple local schools, one of which I must admit was a McDojo. I left the McDojo within a couple months due to the amount of money I was paying versus the amount of material that was being taught. I then tried a local school, which I enjoyed much more, but did not like the fact that all the instructors who ran the classes where teens or very young adults (20-21), not that age has anything to do with a person's martial arts skill. Rather it was the very un-disciplined classes and the way the material was presented that made me not interested in continuing with them

I'm looking for a good school, ideally one that teaches a mix of martial arts. At my old school we had a nice healthy mix of self-defense techniques, katas and weapons. I have learned nunchaku, staff, sai, tonfa and had started learning tai chi sword and kama. I am personally more of a weapons and kata person, especially now with a bum back, so a school that has a nice mix of those is ideal. I even took 2nd place in the under belt division at a Las Vegas international tournament back in 2003 (IIRC). Of course now I'm a few years old, about 40lbs. heavier and way out of shape...hence why I'm looking to get started again so I can get back into shape.

So if anybody happens to know of any good schools to check out please let me know.

    Thanks!

    Hey Jay,

I'd advise keeping an open mind when looking for a new school. Although you enjoyed your old school. If you keep going to new schools with your old school in your mind you'll never allow yourself to see the unique benefits of the new school. Each school offers something different. Also, I'd advise staying a couple months in a new school to give it a chance to do its thing. That should be enough time to decide if its a place you want to stay.

Good Luck and welcome to Orange County!
