Hello from the Deep South!
My name is Jim Sams, and I am an alcoholic. . . No, wait, that's the other Forum! Anyway, I just wanted to give y'all a little background on me so that when I post, you won't be wondering, "Who in the heck is this guy?"
I am 32 years old and currently work a a police officer in Tupelo, MS, and previously have lived in Memphis, TN, Chicago, IL, Boston, MA, Birmingham, AL, Ithaca, NY, and Houston, TX. I have been a high school English teacher, a lifeguard, a Security Guard, a professional martial arts instructor, professional college student, electrician's apprentice, personal trainer, and porn star (perhaps you know me by my stage name "Little Bill"). OK! OK! Before the rumors abound, I was never a professional college student!
My experience in the martial arts lasted for two decades and I studied the following disciplines: Choong Sil Kwan Taekwondo, American Kenpo, Kyokushin(kai), Aikido, and T'ai Chi (briefly). The highest rank I attained was a 4th Dan approximately four years ago. For the past two years, I have taken a hiatus from the classical arts to devote myself fully to the way of the gun ("Gun-Do" for those of you fixated on the traditional register). I have owned many styles of handgun and have a gun on my person at all times (trust me!). Currently you will find a Glock 22 .40 caliber lodged rather painfully in one of my bodily orifices. This requires great discipline and many years of training (See "porn star" above).
At any rate, my two years off have been good ones, as I tended to become quite obsessive concerning the arts while involved in them. I would classify myself as a traditional artist if one so correctly classifies "traditional" as ever evolving. If one does not have this mind set in one's approach to the arts, there is a great likelyhood that I would kick your a$$ is a very few seconds. However, please understand that it is a study and mastery of the science related to us in the traditions that gives one the flexibility of mind to bring innovations to the arts. In other words, unless one is either a kinesthetic genius or has studied the arts for a number of years, it is probably best to take God's hint and listen twice as much as one speaks.
Enough Bruce Leeroy! I just want to say I appreciate everyone on this forum and look forward to learning much from you all. Perhaps I'll even contribute something to your own understanding (See "porn star" above").
