I would agree that McDojo schools are a serious problem that people need to be informed about, but I doubt the McDojo subscribers to Black Belt magazine want to hear about that. Nobody wants to hear the martial art they just signed up for and possibly signed a lengthy contract for, is total BS.

I would say write about training theory. What do you do to make learning easier for your students? Do you do things to reinforce what they have learned? Do you test them occasionally to see how they are progressing? I'm not an instructor so I can't eleborate too much on this, but I would think an article on training theory would be of interest to those wanting to advance in their martial art.

      Cardio in real life training

What about something where you show/describe how you take and segment classes to enhance weight loss in a class setting. Instead of the taebo version how about showing how to chain/link activities together at high and low intensity patterns to achieve the greatest results. The topic "I joined martial arts to get in shape comes to mind" but how many people do it in a really controlled systematic way that is designed to go towards target heart rates and the like. I don't know if this makes a ton of sense but when I started taking classes from you that was one of the big bonuses to studying at the "Mousel Academy".

Good luck and let us know when you will get published.

how about, how much MA has changed over the 20th century.
with the introduction of MMA, NHB, the boom in hybrid styles that have appeared in recent decades...U could include things such as BJJ, JKD etc

        just a passin thought

          Here's a good one

If you want Black Belt magazine to publish your article you will have to patronize them. By that you will take the evolution of Black Belt magazine articles from day one up until the present. This will reflect the evolution of Martial arts for the past forty years or so AND reflect the relation of multi media and the popularization of martial arts. With the advent of mediaI.E. video ,television ,internet movies etc. this has also contributed to martial arts participation and evolution . You can show how Judo was the dominant martial art back in the 60's how karate and Kung Fu became more dominant in the 70's and leading to the 'invention' of JKD ,Ufc's ,Nhb etc. Following the advent of new media. This sounds more like a good candidate for a doctoral dissertation!
          Maybe it would take two parts.It would be titled;
The History of Modern Martial Arts ; An American Perspective ,as seen thru the eyes of Black Belt Magazine

          How's That?

Why not talk about training "Alive", you know against live resisting opponents? That's been the biggest talk on most of these forums.

                    Another Idea

If you wan to get more academic Tim, how about Martial Arts Eras of the 20th Century and the training methods and styles that they introduced. The article could focus on the methods and techniques that are still usefull today.

You could start off with boxing in the Americas talking about great fighters like Dempsey, Marciano, Ali and Tyson...

Introduction of Judo in the 50's (Gene Labelle)
Introduction of Karate in the 60's (Funakoshi, Norris)
Intro of Kung fu in the 70's
Intro of Korean styles and south east asian styles in the 80's (silat, kali, jkd)
Intro of BJJ and MMA in the 90's.

Where we are today and where we could be in the next 10 years.

What about a discussion on the merits and limitations of DVDs and video tapes being used for supplemental training? I'm not suggesting them a replacement to classes but more of an addition to training. Some people do not have the luxury having a school close or funds to attend all of the classes need to take; therefore, the DVDs are videos are sometimes their only option for additional training.

Since you offer training videos and DVDs I just you may have some input on that angle of training.

The growth of McDojism seems like a popular topic to write about so far!

TM a lot of talk about dead drills, etc. has been occuring for a while now in the jkdc camp-you are aware-
would you show or write about executing these "dead drills" into functional "alive" tools upon combat.
i have used trapping many times in sparring, and fighting.
this should be a must in order to open the shut eyes that refuse to see and yet say ther is nothing.

                            So Tim,

what about an article following along the lines of the 'modern training methods' thread. Seems to be fairly topical and one which you are more than qualified to write about. I think we can all learn from and become better fighters due to this kind of understanding.
