A person who is said to be proficient in the arts is like a fool. Because of his foolishness in concerning himself with just one thing, he thinks of nothing else and thus becomes proficient. - Hagarkure
We have 50 years of failure for U.S. judo. That is quite a track record. Out of 300 million people we don't even place in the last olympics.I (we) can say over and over, point out the flaws in thinking and practice but people 's minds are clouded by submissiveness, the non-critical thinking. Why do you have to "get along" in a fighting sport? Isn't that code for accepting the 50 years of failure? What is wrong with questioning the classical veiwpoint. If not why call it competition?
- If you hit him hard, where you want to, and get the effect you want, whatever you're doing, you're doing it right.
- I make it a point to stick around with people smarter than myself. If I learn just 10% of all they know in their fields of expertise I end up becoming smarter than most people.
I am a progressive martial artist my self. I prefer to hone my self for streetfights rather than the ring, octagon or olympics (what for?)
But to think that everyting old is useless is to practice ignorance. that goes for everything, martial arts, computers, fashion etc.
Jump in the latest fashion craze and you end up a fashion victim (you still got that sissy soft mohawk thing? so 10 minutes ago).
You buy the latest PC that ends up obsolete in 6 months (exageration of course) or get the latest windows os to find out that it still hasn't been debugged (not an exageration).
And so in comes the MMA scene. With the debut of Royce Gracie in UFC 1 suddenly grappling became recognized as a legit art. The reality that fights end up on the ground was noticed. suddenly, "this is the way fighting should be!" suddenly all those hongkong kungfu movies look so trite just like the WWF now WWE. So suddenly we see less TKD and karate enter the scene. ("Woah BJJ rocks, grappling is cool, hey where are the TMA guys, hah i knew it they're just a bunch of sissies" runs through our heads).
But really now, that is such an oversimplistic way of looking at things. Granted Gracie won but that does not mean that his art is the best. It simply means he uses his techniques quite well.
If one can recall the UFC 1 there was a bald TKD-savate guy who beat up a grappler by pummeling his nape several times. (you cant do that now in the UFC).
In UFC 4 Kimo beat the hell out of Gracie but gracie won by submission. But in Gracie's next match Kimo was walking proud while gracie couldn't compete.
Try as they might NHB competitions are still not the ultimate guage of the MA. It cannot be a true neutral ground due to rule restrictions like time, where you can't hit, how you can hit... etc. why? you don't want the competitiors killed. You may think that's a load of bull but most TMA in their root are meant for killing.
Yes we know how pathetic TKD has become since it became an olympic sport or how karate looks to stiff etc or how kung fu looks all flash but heck that's in the west. I'd hate to say it, but the west is what gets the watered down version and yes the asians themselves propagate this. why? they have to keep something to themselves.
Karate is so formulaic in the west. there are so many self defense instructions to do this and that, step 1..2..then end with a kiai. Asian training is different. the martial arts are a way of life not a matter of training after work or school. In Korea you'd meet an elevator operator that's 4th dan!
In the vietnam war the South Korean special forces were feared by the congs. You'd be trained to be stark naked with a snake in front of you, that's lunch. make your TKD work!
Ask your sensei which technique counters which he'll guide you to look for your own answers rather than give it to you. Improvisation is such a part of the asian mindset.
Outside asia there is really no pressure to make your martial art work. and so, when it does not work for you it's simply conclude that it's worhtless? that's crap!
we hate calculus because we can't make it work but that computer you're reading this on is a product of advanced mathemathics.
In Japan karate is a living art. Karate practicioners are as free philosphically as mixed martial artists in the west laim to be. they know dirty tricks they know how to make it work.
South Korean students use their TKD against SWAT when they rally for their causes and the police need to be armed and shielded because flying kicks can break through their ranks.
But why aren't they in NHB tournaments?
If a karateka 4th dan black belt had enough ruthlessness and timing to pull of a breaking technique on a shooting BJJ or wrestling guy's neck or head (5-bricks-stacked-breaking-technique on the cranium) and he, the shooter, dies how would that look in national tv? or in a ground and pound situation KIAI... fist smash to the forehead or temple? or in the guard, snap the grappler's neck by pointing his chin to the cieling (spirally)? we'd be showing snuff instead of entertainment.
Can't they weaken their techniques for tournament purposes? And what allow Tito Ortiz to beat you to a pulp? (yes i know he was beaten recently but his name rings a different bell). If an aikidoka manages to pull off a shionage and proceeds to break the persons arm and we catch that wet-sounding crack how does that go for your dinner. It's not far fetched, it happens all the time in the WWE and it's not even done on purpose.
Can you allow a small circle jujitsu guy perfrom a throw which will purposefully make his uke land on his neck or shoulder joint?
i can list countless other techniques which will not be allowed or later not be allowed when done often enough in NHB tournaments.
if you want a real humiliation of TMA do not seek it in the NHB categories which is actually a misnomer because of all the things you can't do.
In truth, death matches have long been in the traditonal martial arts and have been discontinued by law. Do you think the NHB circuit can ever go back to that?
But if it's a whooping you're a wantin:
1.go to your lawyer
2.sign a waiver that you will not blame anyone for any injuries you may incur during a deathmatch
3. walk up to an asian dojo try the Kodokan or challenge some moro fighter in the Philippines to a real blade match.
4. Or call any full blooded native arnisador an SOB with intent to hurt his feelings. (the filipino curse actually is more poigniant because it tranlates as "Your motha's a bitch!")
5. then bring a video cam for documentation.
there you have it Authentic MMA tournament. no holds barred, just put your MA where your mouth is.

Well, you are a remarkable idiot. And a bit of a racist as well, I suspect.

racist? where? idiot? me? why thank you!
all i'm saying is if you want to have a no holds barred tournament as it should be. be ready to put your art to the test. challenge someone formally (but since most TM artists will not stoop too low and see no point in challenges today maybe using fightingwords will get their attention and give you the rumble that you want.meaning they'll defend their honor) that by the way was called a hyperbole.
but the waiver thing is no exageration, it's done. Aaron Banks even used to carry a death certificate with him to be signed by anyone who wanted to challenge him. I mean if you can deal with the legalities you can see what TMA can do. what's so racist about that?
flattery will get you no where. that's it? that's my flame?
