  • Beginner Martial Art

    One of my close friends the other day got mobbed by 4 big guys from our school. Apparently my friend "supposedly" talked about one the the guys' girlfriend. My school is pretty rough and kids carry guns and knifes when you least expect it. I want to learn Martial Arts to build some muscle and be able to take a hit and deliver a stronger one. I also want to defend myself in a situation like what happened with my friend. There is this place nearby which teaches JKD/Jun Fan,Wing Chun, Mauy Thai, and BJJ. I was wondering which of the following you guys would recommend to me as a beginner. Im looking into taking BJJ and Mauy Thai. i took TKD for about a year but it was crap since my instructor didnt know what he was doing. i was also wondering if JKD and Jun Fan were different types of Martial Art, if so which one is more affective on defense and flexibility?

    Hi! I would recommend BJJ and Muay Thai, that is currently what I take, it is very useful and effective in a 1 on 1 fight, especially against the non skilled. Against a knife/gun I can tell you all the defenses you would ever need to learn, ready:

    1. Run!
    2. Pick something up, throw at person, then run!
    3. Pick up something and shield yourself till you can run!
    4. Find someone that can teach you how to defend from a knife attack.

    BJJ is great for many locks, etc. etc. I wouldnt really recommend that being your prime defense though, especially against multiples, for multiples you are doing what you need, CC, keep running!

    The Thai kick can be devistating along with your elbows and knees, especially against a victim, err person not expecting it!

      Forget TKD and WC. Go for the JKD but all of those others are good to MT, BJJ! However the JKD is more street oriented and for self-defense it is better!

      Just curious how old are and where do go to school? The advice 1-4 that Tap4Me is good but the problem is that BJJ (which I have a lot of respect for) is more geared for sport and the ground is no place to be in a street fight although some grappling skills especially counter takedowns, escapes, and techniques to get you back up again are needed and should be learned. JKD teaches these things as well as knife defenses and other weapons defenses and how to use them as well.

      My motto for street fighting is avoid it but if you can't then "Hit first, Hit hard, and Hit often! Grapple only when you have to!

        Don't focus on one martial art

        I do believe that Martial Arts are good but only to a certain degree. In a street fight it is a different story. You need to be aware that these fights last only a mere 30 seconds usually and you will probably not get the chance to use your skills. My advice is that you learn a number of different techniques and do not concentrate on one martial art. You will need to learn how to master the knock out punch and considering that 99% of fights in the street go to the floor you need to learn your grappling and floor combat. I can reccomend a book to you called '1001 street fighting tips' or something like that name. I borrowed it once and it helps you to realise what a 'real' fight in a 'real-life' situation involves. It also showed me a number of ways to defend from knives and guns as well as fists. If you want any more info then please reply and I will help you if i can. I personally hate people like those you described, I will do as much as I can to make sure that you are not a victim.

          Hey No disrespect and there is nothing wrong with taking different MAs but when it comes to weapons defenses even well trained people get cut and or killed. I wouldn't recommend to anyone to learn weapons defenses from books or videos unless they already have 10 are so years in MA training.

          There are good systems out there that teach strictly self-defense and are good at it JKD is one of the best. Others I would recommend are Krav Maga, and Systema, Sammy Franco’s CFA and there are many others.

          As you said there is nothing wrong with taking different MAs but there is also nothing wrong with taking only one MA if it’s the right one.

            Hey aaronmason I just thought of something, Is this book '1001 street fighting tips' By Sammy Franco”? I have much respect for Sammy. I have not read this book but if it's by him it's probably good.

            Still don't think because you have books and tapes you can easily apply the thing in them. You need an instructor and partners for this.

              thanks for the suggestions guys, i just found out that the place teaches "art and philosophy of JKD" and Jun Fan Gung Fu as another art, is the "art/philosophy of JKD" anygood? i also heard from a friend that wing chun was not bad, anyways..i want to have awareness when fighting multiples also, like a 1 on 2 or more fight, i want to be able to defend myself in that situation but still be able to have some skills in grappling and groundfighting, i guess what im saying is i would like to learn a well-rounded martial art thats very useful. thanks

                Knowledge in ground fighting is very useful, with the ability to know how to ground fight, you also learn techniques to avoid takedowns and if you fall you learn ways to get up while minimizing damage.
