CONWAY, S.C. - A teenage girl was stabbed to death outside a middle school as students were arriving for class Thursday, and a man was arrested in
connection with the attack, authorities said.
The teenager had been in the parking lot of Carolina Forest Middle School when she was stabbed, Police Sgt. Bob Carr said.
Her name and age were not released, and it wasn't clear if she was a student at the school or if she knew her attacker. Both the middle school and neighboring Carolina Forest High School were locked down after the stabbing.
"People just sat in their car and waited and when you saw the ambulances, and firetrucks and police cars going on you knew something was going on," said Jill Watts, 49, who works at the electric company near Conway High, where her child attends school.
Calls to the school rang unanswered Thursday. Susan Johnson, an administrative assistant at the Horry County school district, referred all questions to police.
The victim died at Conway Medical Center, Horry County Deputy Coroner Dan Bellamy told WBTW. Conway is about 15 miles from Myrtle Beach.
