  • thinking bout getting a Pit Bull

for home defense and running partner... my uncle is waiting for some Pit Bull puppies, he's going to give me one free...

  • #2
They have a bad reputation for mauling other dogs and people... Keep it on a leash and you shouldn't have a problem. My neighbors have a pit cross that I will kill if it comes within 30 feet of my front door! They usually keep it on a leash now that I let them know my intent.

my uncle told me to get a pure Pit bull, he says when you start breeding different mixes, thats when you can get a dog to more potentially be berserk... I think its all in how they are raised, I have seen some Pits that wouldn't harm a kid

I think you’re right, dude. Give her a lot of love and still let her know who’s boss and it should be fine….all the same, keep her on a leash

I love dogs…hell, all animals, but things can go wrong. However, I’m sure you’ll keep on top of things. Post from time to time and let us know how it’s going. Post some pics if it’s not to much trouble

Bubba was a fine pit. He never harmed another dog or looked at a friend of Arn's like nothing but a buddy. Good dog's go bad. A guest came up state to meet and greet a fellow M artist and had a bit of fear in her body language. Bubba bit her arm and didn't let go! Resistance and efforts to free her from Bubba's jaws caused more damage... The dog was put down that night by a bullet from a neighbors pistol...

Long story short Arn was charged with weapon violation, animal cruelty and then sued for 1,000,000.00 A friend wasn't really a friend and a good dog got shot in the head. So much for bubba. Sad story! So much for "friends" that think a dog attack is a way to get a big check? Yeah... Enjoy the responsibility of having a pit... They're great pets! I've had a few myself but none of them have caused as much suffering as my Kelpie!

I've known a number of pit bulls and I think it's really all about how they're raised. I've known some very sweet and obedient pit bulls, but the breed isn't for everyone. You definately have to take owning one as a serious responsibility because if you don't eventually someone will get badly hurt. That said I think their reptutation isn't entirely fair to the breed; any big dog that isn't properly trained and supervised is going to be a menace.

One of the best dogs I ever had was a Great Dane-Pitbull cross! He had a LOUD DEEP bark that would resonate the walls! His favorite "trick" was gently mouthing the hand or wrist of anyone that came to the fence to walk them to the front door....

Of course if you didn't know him this would be kinda scarry.

Its stupid. If you need a weapon, go get one. If you want a dog, you can get all the benefits of a pet with a breed that is not as dangerous.

People get hurt or killed and dogs (who are hardly at fault for their own nature) end up being put down because people are too stupid to see common sense or are such ******* that they think a certain kind of dog will make them look tough.

People who insist on keeping these breeds as pets don't care about dogs and don't care about people.

                    Its stupid.

People get hurt (sometimes children are killed) and the dogs get killed. Not too hard to figure out. Stupid ego bullshit, and nothing more.

You can post all the sensationalisitic media stories you want, it doesn't prove a thing. When a dalmation, or a golden retriever mauls a child it never gets covered yet for some reason the media bends over backwards to portray pit bulls as vicious animals. A small handful of people are killed in dog attacks each year, (29 in 2005 and 22 in 2004 for the entire USA) not nearly enough to suggest that owning any breed of dog is too dangerous. Not only that, the breed responsible for the most deaths changes each year. What reason (other than blind ignorance) do you have for singling out pit bulls and their owners? Why not single out german shepherds, or rottweilers, or st. bernards instead? The fact is that you're willing to stereotype thousands of loving pit bull owners because of the (reprehensible) actions of a few people who participate in illegal dog fights. I guess you don't need evidence suggesting that the breed is inherrently more dangerous than others when you have your own paranoia and prejudice to guide you... moron

any dangerous breed is a stupid choice for a pet

You may find facts "sensationalist" but that's your problem. The fact is that Pits and Rotties are responsible for more than half of all fatal attacks on humans. Pit bulls alone more than 1/3. Is this really so hard to grasp?

The dogs responsible for most homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers: Pit bull-type dogs were involved in 1/3 of dog bite related fatalities.

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)

Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas.
