  • Anybody have their doctorate?

Okay I know it's a long shot, but does anybody have their doctorate on the site?

It's not a "doctorate" per se, but I have a Juris Doctor.

Britt: I'm working on mine. I think.

It's funny. At the moment Canadian law schools typically only issue LLBs, but UBC is thinking of switching the degree designation, so by the time I graduate it might be a JD.

          Congratulations in advance, counselor.

We had the LL.B. in the U.S. years ago, and you'll still meet an older lawyer occassionally who has an LL.B. instead of a J.D. The switch was probably made when some bright lawyer realized that people with "doctor" in their degree qualified for better pay in academic and federal employment. It's kind of odd having an educational track where you get a doctoral degree before a masters, but there you have it. The terminal academic law degree here is "Doctor of the Science of Jurisprudence" or J.S.D (it goes by some other names as well, I think), which is more equivalent to a Phd. Those are extremely rare, though, I've never met somebody with one.

Thanks for the replies. I've been thinking of entering grad school.

I can pretty much study just about anything, and a JD is one of the things I'm considering. I'm also looking at a Ph.D in psychology.

Two radically different paths I know. Anyway, I'm trying to find out more about the grad school experience and such.

I am on the same path as well. I am finishing a MBA and looking at programs for clinical pychology if I can get the company to pay for it. There are some joint degree programs Ibelieve for psy and JD, but the obovious question is what do you want to do with he degree(s)?

I have an MS and am changing my major to Sociology in the doctoral program because I'm getting nowhere in Political Science. I will have one in a couple of years.

My brother just got his Ph.D in Psychology. We're all super proud of him!!

I want to go back eventually to get a Master's in English lit or Education at some point, but I'm still trying to pay off my B.A. loans by the age of 30 (a long-time goal of mine.)

Curious what type of job you want with a Sociology degree. (I was a Soc major.)

Yeah, I wanna teach English (hopefully starting next fall), and I've looked at the teaching salaries--they are much higher for people with post-grad degrees (any degree) than they are for regular ol' undergrads. So I guess I have to decide whether to study English or education. Of course, I'm not in it for the money. (Though teaching does pay more than my 2.5 jobs right now, sadly enough.)

I've been sitting in on high school classes, but I volunteer at the middle school. So I'm open to both. I actually would like to get certified in K-12.

It's hard to get history teaching jobs even on the high school level. Math and science are really in demand, as is ESL and special ed.

I'm hoping I get into a grad school...right now I'm working towards a B.S. (by the end of next year I should have it) in Clinical Psychology, and I'm most likely going to continue on to a Master's in Counseling...the reason why I'm going the long way around to a PhD is because my faculty advisor told me that grad school psych programs (decent ones) require a great deal of volunteer work in the field and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.8 ... right now I'm sitting on a 3.6.

...shit's way too competitive these days. Cut throat. It really is ridiculous.

I can't help but find it humorous. A "BS" in Psychology!

                              It writes itself!
