FBI releases last of secret John Lennon files

LOS ANGELES, Dec 20 (Reuters Life!) - The
FBI has released the last 10 documents from its secret files on slain Beatle John Lennon that had been withheld for 25 years on the ground they could prompt "military retaliation" against the United States, campaigners for their release said on Wednesday.

The files turn out to contain only well known information about Lennon's ties to left-wing leaders and antiwar groups in London in 1970 and 1971, said Jon Wiener, a history professor at the University of California, Irvine, and the Southern California chapter of the
    American Civil Liberties Union.

"Today we can see that the national security claims the FBI has been making for 25 years were absurd from the beginning. The Lennon FBI file is a classic case of excessive government secrecy," Wiener said in a statement.

The released documents include one that states Lennon "encouraged the belief that he holds revolutionary views ... by the content of some of his songs."

Another talks of the Beatle turned anti-war campaigner promising to finance a left-wing bookshop in London. A third describes a 1971 interview with Lennon in The Red Mole, a London underground newspaper, in which the singer "emphasized his proletarian background and his sympathy with the oppressed and underprivileged people of Britain and the world."

Wiener first requested the files in 1981. After legal action under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act that went all the way to the Supreme Court, he got most of the 300 pages in the Lennon files released in 1997.

But 10 documents remained classified on the grounds of national security. The FBI told the U.S. courts in 1983 that release of those documents could "lead to foreign diplomatic, economic and military retaliation against the United States."

Wiener, whose campaign was detailed in a book and formed the basis of the 2006 documentary "The U.S. vs John Lennon," has posted the documents on the Web site www.LennonFBIfiles.com.

    "I doubt that
Tony Blair's government will launch a military strike on the U.S. in retaliation for the release of these documents," Wiener said.

Lennon, whose iconic song "Imagine" has become a rallying call for anti-war activists around the world, was murdered in New York in December 1980 by a deranged fan.

The UFO cults are really quite an interesting topic to cover. In an anthropology class I took about cults, there were some pretty weird parallels between so-called "abduction" experiences and "religious" experiences...the main culpret appears to be an altered state of consciousness brought on by naturally occuring brain chemicals and associations in the brain with different things. There is a really bizarre correlation between UFO abductions and the type of experiences of some Holy Rollers.

congnition to concrete hallucinations...with a little help from naturally occuring processes. I guess reality is truly subjective. A schizophrenic has a very different sense of things than you or me...neither is wrong, it's just what goes on in your head. Everything we percieve is done so by internal systems...hence...it's all in your head!

Actually...I wouldn't rule out his cabinet somehow being involved in the hijackings and shit. I mean, looking at it from their position, the government definitely exploited the shit out of it. If they didn't plan it, they certainly took advantage in a very fucked up way, and it definitely kept the media busy and off political scandals at the same time.

I support our troops, but the war in Iraq, in my opinion, was a mistake. And a poorly planned, and even more poorly implemented one at that.

Exactly right. If you start with the premise that everything is a conspiracy, you will be right sometimes, but you'l be wrong a whole lot more.

Yeah Boar, I know about cointelpro, MK-ultra, the Tuskegee airmen all that.

And Like I said there are elements of 9-11 that I DO have problems with
Like the lack of jets scrambled and the complete abandonment of FAA policy concerning the procedure for aircraft that go off flight path.

But I learned all I could on the issues I have contention with WAY before
"loose change" and like I said when I heard these two morons "debate",
I knew they were cracked in the coconut.

The whole loose change documentary is about 3 steps from blaming
9-11 on homosexuals and the wrath of god.

                        Conspiracy theory insult to victims

I'm sorry but discussing 9/11 and saying it was anything other than a terrorist act by Al-Qaeda is an insult to the memories of the victims and the families who still have to live with the pain that day created.

Hey move to a country that OUTLAWS questioning things they don't like questioned, otherwise realize we have the DUTY to question the crap that flows from the mouthpieces of those running the show.

Weird. I always thought you were just a ...well ...Dick. And now you've got me changing my mind about someone I'd already completely dismissed.

I am humbled, my friend. And for what it's worth, I thank you for changing my mind and my opinion of you. Times like this, I'm glad to be proven wrong.
thanks mike. i know i have a bad attitude at times and say harsh things often, but i am trying to work on these things. not just here on the forum, but in other parts of my life as well. hearing from guys like you and Tom who have better outlooks and attitudes than me has helped me as well. i think getting banned from this forum was a good thing, cause to be honest i really didnt even realize up until then what a dick i had been. thanks again for letting me back.

The insult is the raising of theories that are so out there that it takes the focus away from the reality.Asking tough questions is one thing, but asking stupid questions is the insult. There is also conspiracy theories about the Bali bombings saying it was by the U.S.Do you believe that as well? What about the London bombings, the ones in Spain? All organised by each countries internal security agencies or by the zionist movement(that some extreme muslimist groups actually say).
And Boarspear you utter f@#king tool.Do something useful and shut up.
