  • What do you respect more?

question 1:A great fighter or a great instructor capable of producing great fighters given the right students.?
by fighter i mean martial artist, fighter in the broadest sense, not just ring sport. or just ring sport really however you want to take it i guess.

Personally i respect a great instructor more though i have respect for both.

question 2: Does an instructor have to have fought in order to be a good instructor?

In my opinion no but it helps if he has had 1 or 2 fights either in the ring or in self defense in order to convey the reality of the situation in training.

    I respect a greater trainer...

however, a better fighter is more fun to watch.

You don't see alot of trainer highlight reels.

Where are all the Vince Lombardi reels? Yep...

    didn't think so.

        Interesting example.

I think Bruce Lee had an outstanding drive and commitment to his own personal development as a martial artist. However, of all the testimonies I hear on his ability, not many stand out as holding him in high regard as a teacher. I believe he was more of a leader, who used his pool of students as a laboratory in order to experiment, and grow his own art.

His ability as a fighter is founded largely on hearsay and rumour. When I say fighting I too am speaking in the general sense, so not sport or street specific. I do however exclude sparring your own students and peers, which is just training and not fighting, yet that is where most of the testimony comes from.

And which fights are you referring to as rumored? Just curious.
