  • I am such a nerd...

    Do the math...

So I'm sitting here trying to design a basic subwoofer box for three 12 inch loudspeakers... Maybe not so simple as a box, right?

I'm building a 5th order system with an active crossover. A small sealed box inside vented box tuned to a low frequency to optimize bass.

So I ask some "expert" on the Internet...

He tries to convince me that two 6 inch woofers will do the same thing as one 12 inch woofer and I can use a smaller "box".

    Phui...

    Lets think....

A typical 6 1/2 inch woofer has a conical area of roughly 33.2 square inches.

(Area = Pie X Radius squared)

And two of them will have about 66-1/2 square inches to push air.

A single 12 inch woofer has an area of 113 square inches!

Forget that the big woofer easily has twice the excursion?

It's still going to take FOUR speakers half the size to come close to a big one...

No point really, just had to vent...

    And I love big woofers...

    Obviously...

I'm just not sure if my trunk is big enough...

More like Richard Strauss Introduction to Also Sprach Zarathustra...

There is a 32Hz. organ note underlying the whole minute and 48 seconds that gets louder and louder until it reaches it's crescendo near the very end.

It's awesome at high volume. Shakes my whole car!

You know Tant all science aside, I've actually tried both the 2 6's setup and the twelve set up, and depending on the amp I use and even beside the math,

I've actually had the 6's sound better. I could never figure out anything other than maybe the amp I was using at the time worked better with the 6's.

        One of life's mysteries.

No doubt there are some (seriously) outstanding little bass drivers out there.

I'd say a small woofer in the right box can certainly sound better than a crappy big woofer in the WRONG box.

I've tried small (8 inch) Rockford woofers, boston acoustics, MB Quarts and others.

Four 8's with 400 watts will make some NOISE buddy!

Smaller drivers generally have a higher Resonant frequency Fs. Kicker came out with passive radiators that help (A LOT)... waaayyy back when...They make nice tight (punchy) bass

If you have enough POWER (RMS WATTS) to drive the extra mass I think a big one is worth the space. It's about that bottom octave that you don't HEAR so much as FEEL.

If you look into the state of the art you'll find all kinds of exotic stuff...

I actually already have four midbass drivers in the car.

          LOL
