I just read a quote in Yukio Mishima's interpretation of the Hagakure that explicity tells the reader to embrace egoisim as part of the samurai ethos. I found it kind of opposite to everything I've learned about humility as a fighter and martial artist (and human citizen)...but there were other passages in direct conflict with that one, so I figure the middle path is probably the implied message.

That's a superb article EF. Intelligent, articulate, and above all very refreshing.

I refer back to an earlier post on all the false humility I find in martial arts. Everyone I have ever met in our arena has had an ego the size of Texas, yet they try to disguise it with a line of bullshit the size of the Atlantic.

I have a very healthy ego, for which I am incredibly grateful, because it has driven me to succeed in what I am most passionate about.

The real issue isn't ego. I think it is confidence vs. cockiness.

People exude confidence on different levels, sometimes quietly, sometimes outwardly - but it doesn't interfere with your ability to get along with others. Confidence provides you courage to take on challenges and solve problems.

Cockiness interferes with your ability to get along with others. Cockiness usually takes its form in bad sportsmanship, excessive criticism, bad attitude etc.
