  • Mission Specific Skill Sets

While there is no "Best Martial Art" (oh boy I have to be careful how I do this), there are in my experience mission/situation specific skill sets that are better used in some situations.

    E.g.

While grappling and ground work have obvious liabilities when in a streetfight involving multiple opponents, it is used by law-enforcement (when they are covered and usually specific to applying the cuffs).

I'm a striker by nature but I call my stand up grappling skill set a "for friends" kind of art. (Like breaking up two other friends who wanna have a go with each other, I can apply a loose rear naked choke (minus the choke) to keep one of the two peaceful. I obviously can't start hooking and backfisting my buddies.)

Sometime back I saw an article in a martial arts mag "The uses of TKD high kicks" and it showed self defense scenarios. Like kicking someone behind the safety of a table, can't punch can't grab but can kick.

I know with enough imagination almost any art can be used for most scenarios but then again there are some scenarios that are more expediently dealt with by certain techniques and ultimately certain martial arts more readily train those skills though not exclusively.

As a soldier chooses his guns specific to the mission on hand, what martial arts are "best for which scenarios"? And if possible give the techniques commonly trained by that art as proof

    Examples could be:

    surprise attacks
    bar fights
    seated
    car jacking
    multiple opponents

one art may not have the monopoly and it would be great to see differnt approaches per scenario.
