I have visited SDF and Defend.net on a regular basis. Allow me to compare/contrast:
Self Defense Forums is a forum dedicated primarily to discussions on defense of the self; legally, morally, and of course, physically. This forum has threads pertaining to philosophical, political, martial arts, streetwise or 'real world' and general discussion topics.
On this forum, I have debated at length with some pretty, how should I say, 'prominent internet personalities'. There is a core group of forumites with a wide array of background history who truly understand how to form logical arguments and see them through to proper conclusions.
Final word: If you tread on this site, bring your IQ with you and be prepared to debate. This forum is strictly moderated, if you plan to troll, your visit will be short and unpleasant.
Mousel's Deluxe Martial Arts Forums is a forum that discusses primarily the sport aspects of Jeet Kun Do and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a strong undercurrent of self-defense applications and a variety of other arts and topics thrown in for good measure.
On this forum I have gone round and round with some highly respected authorities on Martial Arts, well-versed peers, and completely chuckleheaded troll bait. I have learned a tremendous amount about grappling, both Mixed Martial Arts competitions, and how disciples of BJJ and JKD deal with opponents on and off 'the mat'.
The culture at Defend.net is much more relaxed and the moderators will only intercede when forumites are completely out of bounds. This allows for more creative discussions than some forums will allow, however, it also lends itself to monthly (if not weekly) polls concerning the greatest arts and artists of all time.
Final note: Defend.net is a great resource for BJJ and JKD information. A poster is free to speak their minds, whether their comments are contextual or not. The forum regulars are veterans of numerous flame wars and they're also astute and providing useful information when you ask the right questions.
What ever happened to selfdefenseforums.com? I haven't visited that site in about a year, but over the last few months the URL has been down? Did the admin finally euthanaise the site?

Fighting hackers and trolls was becoming a full time job for the admin and mods, after the last bot attack caused a server crash it was decided that discussing the arts on the net was like pissing in the wind. Everything that needed to be said has been said 1000 times too many already and while screwing with trolls is funny it isn't productive. Since the core group didn't need a forum to maintain contact and it was felt the forums were stealing time from more productive endeavors SDF was retired.
