  • Consistent moderation

Some moderators will allow swearing, others (terry) won't.

Some moderators don't mind arguing between forum members, others (terry) do.

Some moderators delete threads and posts (terry) and others don't.

You need to all agree on what is allowed and what isn't.

I have full confidence that this thread will not be deleted since it is on the open access forum and I don't think that terry is a moderator here (but if he sees this he might start deleting my posts and threads on other forums to punish me).

I'd better check forum 8 (fitness).

I'm not saying that terry is wrong, just that he doesn't allow things that other moderators do.

I never said you were wrong terry, I'm not questioning your moderating.

Given that many readers are underage on this forum, reasonable discretion is exercised. I don't delete all swearing. I'm sure there is some stuff I don't catch. However, when posts get out of hand, I'll delete them. Among the posts I've deleted recently include content of: 1) explicit discussion of deviant sexual acts, 2) offensive and inflamatory statements of a racist nature.

Some moderators don't mind arguing between forum members, others (terry) do.
Argument can take many forms. At its best it can be an animated and enlightening discussion. In that context it is the people whose ideas differ the most from your own that will challenge you and cause you to learn. However, when the discussion degrades to long tit-for-tat exchanges of ad homynym attacks it does not educate, it does not enlighten. And when it starts sounding like a fight between two second graders I go to work. Left unchecked, this type of destructive behavior, commonly known as trolling, will drive positive contributors away, leaving just the trolls. That is not what this site is intended to do.

Some moderators delete threads and posts (terry) and others don't.
The attention of moderators is intermittent. Sometimes they go on vacation. Sometimes they get busy with other activities. We have exchanged messages about what is appropriate conduct for moderators. We're usually on the same page. If there is an action that you disagree with I encourage you to talk to Tim Mousel. He is a reasonable guy.

Honestly, it sounds as if you are feeing sorry for yourself. My suggestion: Make more constructive posts in which you're putting some useful, positive information out.

          Lizard,
The fact of the matter is this: the actions of one moderator reflect on the rest. If the rest of us didn't support what Terry does, we would say something about it to him. I support whatever action Terry or Tim choose to take.

I delete my fair share of posts when I see something needs doing. I've been on vacation lately, so I've missed some things that I probably would have wiped from the forums. Moderators don't get paid to do their job, and we don't live to babysit posters, so we aren't able to catch everything that is objectionable.

I don't think that terry is a moderator here (but if he sees this he might start deleting my posts and threads on other forums to punish me).
I don't recall the last time that anyone, even trolls, have had their posts deleted as a result of a disagreement with a moderator. Why you would suggest this is beyond me, and it's not a good way to gain the support of anyone (that includes me) who has influence here. I would suggest that you try a different approach the next time you have an issue with the way things are done.

Honestly, it sounds as if you are feeing sorry for yourself. My suggestion: Make more constructive posts in which you're putting some useful, positive information out.
This is really the crux of the issue. Moderation of your posts won't be an issue if you consistently present yourself in an intelligent and reasonable manner. Case closed.

Actually you don't have to disagree with a moderator to get deleted. You only have to disagree with one of their female full of ego friends..........

I must say i have noticed inconsistencies.

More to the point there was recently a conversation between myself, lizard and falcon where lizard was insulting falcon and i think i was too. falcon made a homosexual comment towards lizard and falcon was told to stop.

Point being me and lizard made far worse comments before hand and it seemed a little unfair.
Give benefit of the dought though i gueass its hard to follow as a moderator if you join in mid conversation, you want to put a stop to it immediatley.
I can understand your side as well.

I have no problem with the deleting of posts. This is a very good forum (I've seen some of the others, taken over by trolls).

I just want to know what is allowed and what isn't and for all the moderators to agree on what will be deleted and what won't.

"I don't delete all swearing. " That is exactly my point, I see swearing, you don't seem to mind, I swear and it gets deleted. I'd rather you deleted all swearing than delete some but not others. If I'd know that swearing wasn't allowed I would have used different words.

"ever notice how people will attack someone directly and then say, "i'm not criticizing you/no offense"?

i'm not criticizing you here, lizard. no offense or anything."

Thanx. You're a ****ing ****head....... no offense

Making a decision to moderate posts involves subjective decisions, such as what is constructive, what is appropriate and what is decent. You can't please everybody, and you don't need even to try to please trolls. Ghost, Lizard, Thai Br: You have done a nice job of proving my point. Your posts rapidly spiral down into childish exchanges of invective and profanity.

I've actually been criticized for not enough moderation. There have been several private message complaints about ghost, Thai Br and falcon, and the people who have made these complaints carry some weight because of their large number of constructive posts. I'm persuaded by this point of view and could make some recommendations to Tim and Ryanhall to siteban a couple of trolls. That would improve things. Moderators have been out on summer vacation, so the quorum for a consensus decision has not yet occurred.

Finally, there are some cases where we do the moderation offline through E-mail or via private messages. This is generally the case for two conditions: 1) For people who are mature enough to reason with, or 2) Where there are organizational politics or personnel issues that are best handled with care. Where this is the case you won't get the full context.

Just out of curiosity who actualy does the banning? Is it just one moderator, the owner of the forum or a unnanimous decision?

AS long as you can tell what is a joke and what isnt.
I would have to say that if i have genuinely offended any one that i am sorry for doing so. I would also like to add that i think that i make at least as many contructive points as deconstructive ones so i think i should be allowed to live.

                          Heil Terry!

Thats a joke by the way the bit above it wasnt.

Well... er... I usualy don't swear, I make people laugh, if someone asks for an opinion I give it, if someone asks a question and I know the answer I tell them, and I ask sensible questions (which in turn encourages others to think about things and gives them a chance to be constructive or put forward their point of view).
