The Judoka I work out with call each other by their first names. If they're being 'polite' they throw a sensei in front...

Master in MA is not the same as the Master opposite of slave
                MASTERed the Martial Art
Anyway some black people have a problem with is the word Boss, just because they think it means owner, it doesn't, it means employer ( well the dutch version does I proved that to people at work using the dictionary)

Don't know how they teach Judo in the States but here, formality in Judo is about the lowest you can find in japanese MA
Call for Zazen en then just Rei! en bow, and up again
Also some religious people have something against the bowing, daying you should only boe for god, bt you are not bowing for someone but to eachother, just as a sing of respect, not submission

training is mostly geared at competition so a lot of randori

So I think I'm not alone if I say we do not understand what you think really is wrong with teaching, appart from the 5 seconds of bowing and a teacher called Sensei which is teacher, master, doctor

A teacher would be called a master in my country and I know it was in England because you have Headmasters there but wouldn't know how this is in the States

So Kevin enlighten us what's so wrong and why do you think they are so wrong?

                  bowing in martial arts

Partly the religous overtones of bowing exclude alot of people from learning martial arts. From the sports aspects for example it excludes alot of muslems and fundamentalist christians and I think some people are just turned off by the formality . Here in the U.S. we have the A.A.U (ameteur athletic union) and olympic levels where goverment monies are used to help support these sports somewhat .It does then enter into the religous freedoms that are so close to american hearts. Just as the seperation of church and state is meant to keep the religous fanatics from taking over our govermant( leading to the creation of a hellhole like alot of the other places on earth where wars are fought to see which group of religous fanatics will hold power )our goverment has these checks and balances built into our constitution.
Also the bowing and ceromonies associated with Judo for instance are a direct influence of Shinto religon which was the official japanese goverment religon for 150 years culminating in World War Two where a whole lot of people were subjected to the using of Shinto as an extreme form of facism and racism.
U.S. prisoners under the Japanese were 17 times more likly to suffer death in captivity than under the Nazis. The Cult of the Sun ,Emperor worship resulted in the allied forces having to stomp Togo and company into the mud and their quest for world dominance also resulted in the use of nuclear weapons on japanese cities. If you want to know the extent of suffering resulting from this ask the Japanese. Or the survivors of the Bataan death march, the rape of Nanking China etc.
But the one big reason where bowing and the so called inappropriate traditions of Shinto influence in judo is that it keeps people looking backwards in the sport resulting in the same old inefficent and backward teaching methods, the traditional or classical veiwpoint excluding participation and resulting in inferior Judo . The U.S didn't even place in the last olympics and it can be traced to this backwardness. People are not sticks and boxes so why use this analogy to teach Judo. Also throws and other athletic movement is not accomplished standing still so why would any body try to teach it that way. It is because of the traditions and inapropriate (for our culture) customs Does it help to learn a sport by having to learn it in a foreign language.
Shinto religon is not the problem it is it's misuse by some people for their own evil ends the same as the Moslem religon is being used by some of these other assholes for their little quest for world domination. And ,for example ,does it make sense to have our military Judo teams have to bow to compete in Judo contests?

Shinto-ism didn't lead the Japanese into WWII.

The Japanese entry into WWII was due to many factors, among which were:

                    1. The resentment felt by the Japanese when they realized that grabbing colonies in Asia would not give them a place of equality with the other colonial powers.

                    2. Too many big fish in one pond, i.e. Great Britain, the USA, and Japan exerting their muscle in the east.

                    3. The US embargo placed on Japan which would have crippled the Japanese Navy (and their Empire) once their fuel reserves had run out.

What frigging ceremonies? You bow or salute in every type of martial art. You know why? It has to do with the "martial" part. You know how like in the military they salute each other? Some Asian cultures bow. Some salute. It has nothing to do with religion.

This is just wrong on so many levels I don't know where to begin. Roland at least corrected some of it. Yeah, big surprise Japanese would kill US GI's after we firebombed their cities. But don't equate the mistreatment of POWs (which happened on all sides of that war) with the Holocaust.

What on Earth does Shinto have to do with Judo anyway? You are a raving lunatic. If anything, most of the Japanese Budo are influenced by Zen. And its debatable whether you'd call Zen a religion anyway. Are you thinking of Sumo maybe? Yeah, Sumo is really Shinto influenced. It is the national sport of Japan. Judo, as everyone has pointed out to your insane brain already, is very informal, and no one ever talks about Shinto. Where the hell do you train that you are exposed to Shintoism in Judo? Its a frigging bow. The instructor bows to you. You bow to him. Its just being polite. What the hell is your problem with being polite?

To be fair, I don't think Kevin was attempting to equate the Holocaust to the mistreatment of POWs - he was merely comparing the treatment of Allied prisoners under the Nazi regime (who were fairly brutal, at least to Russian POWs) to their treatment under the Japanese; unless you were Russian, you were pretty much better off in German hands during WWII than Japanese hands.

The fire-bombing of Japanese cities and many of the atrocities committed by the Japanese were pretty unrelated - the Rape of Nanking, the Bataan Death March, etc. all occurred before US forces managed to establish air bases close enough to the home islands to begin their fire-bombing campaign. And many of the Allied POW's executed by the Japanese during the war were British and Dutch; nations that, while allied with the USA, had very little to do with the fire bombing campaign on Japan.

The reasons for the Japanese atrocities is varied and complex and goes far beyond the "it's because of the code of Bushido" rationale that one often reads - the best account I've seen that attempts to explain this was written by Timbo over in the History forum at www.mma.tv.

Why are you so insecure about bowing? I've already explained this to you idiot. All martial arts bow or salute or in someone acknowledge respect, especially towards their instructors. This has to do with martial traditions. They are martial arts after all. I'm sure back in the day in Europe that before guys had their claymore classes or short sword and shield class or whatever that they bowed to their instructor. Or probably kneeled even. You should be forced to bow a hundred times a day in front of Kano's picture as punishment for your special brand of idiocy.

How come you don't go all crazy about Aikido people and their little Ueshiba shines they have in every dojo?

For that matter how come you don't get all undone about the Pledge of Allegiance? Or over the National Anthem at sporting events? Aren't those "brainwashing"?

Oh, and you're a douche in case you forgot.
