how many time did you have that someone pull his long trousers to have shorts under it and than fight in a more upright stance but you didn't sweep him because otherwise he would bang his head against the wall ?

Comeone Jack Johnson, we all have had fools in the gym

Most of the bashing Ryan Talks about is related to the fact that these arts don't train/fight full contact not in the techniques used, knees, elbows, hooks, lowkicks, headbuts and takedows are all also present in these arts even though you do not see then used in THEIR matches
Some of the TMA didn't have competitions, still do not have and never will, still people here like to use the :"I've never seen a ...... in UFC or Pride, why would they? to suit your wishes?

Most of the time competition isn't meant to prove which is best but who is best
Actually the early UFCs are the only competitions that were setup to prove which is best after that everybody started to cross train or at least incorporate or re-introduce certain techniques and it became who is best again

          nagashi truki=sliding jab
          Shita tsuki=uppercut
          kagi tsuki=hook
gyaku tsuki=right starit punch(for orthodox stance)
          atama uchi=headbut
          empi uchi=elbow
          sune geri=lowkick
          mae geri kekomi=puch off frontkick
          hiza geri=knee
          sukui uke=scooping block
          Nagashi uke=sliding block

like I said it is all there
again someone who has experienced Shotokan karate that thinks all trad arts are done this way Shotokan isn't even representable for Karate let alone for other traditional arts

btw, don't know what a jeden barai is.

Gedan barai is "Down block". As someone kicks you lift your arm up to shoulder level, and then sweep it down to block the kick..... except that the kick probably connected before you finished, and probably even went too low for the block to make any difference anyway.

I did so many of these in my Karate days that they are still a conditioned reflex even now. I get my legs kicked black and blue because of it.

I have my doubts if Gedan barai was meant to be a low "block"all other blocks and defences are called uke, why isn't a low block gedan uke
Barai is sweep, so low sweep is the translation of it

BTW I've seen a photoshoot of wrestlers (colegestyle) thatblocked a low kick like that and then grabbed it
My reaction was how do you lift his leg with a broken arm,

The only way to avoid that is to use body movement at the same time this way you won't break your arm

Personally I've never used a gedan barai against any kick

WKF karatematches are showing so little technique, you could become a champ with 3 or 4 techniques
Backfist, reverse punch, roudhouse kickand maybe front kick
the latter not being very popular occasionally you will see a heelkick (ushiro mawashi geri)
doesn't mean people do not train other techniques, only those schools that only focus on competition do so

You hath doubted me. Do some research, come back, and then apologise. I may forgive your sin.

ps - Gedan Barai is definately as I described. The block is done in a sweeping motion.

some people try to use a sweeping or pushing block while stepping in to plant a reverse punch. If you throw a one two combination they block the jab to walk into a cross. I sparred with someone who did this about five or six times each time coming in harder and faster and consequently adding that much more force to my cross. They eventually flipped out and started to come at me with head butts elbows and forearm smashes.

I would only step in with a sliding block on the outside of the arm, this way it's harder to do the cross Otherwise I would just slideblock and on the cross step in diagonally to the non crosspunching side
Both ways will put me slightly to the side of your body making a cross harder to land and I will be in a position where I can do many things

Anyway, I don't know about all this censorship. Pretty soon people won't be able to bash JKD, and then BJJ and Muay Thai. I mean, people bash JKD and Bruce Lee all the time... who cares?

...and then we won't be able to say which arts are good either lest it be construed to be bashing all OTHER arts.

                      Can you say, "slippery slope"?

This is not good for the board.

                        Sashan,
Forgive me for being blunt, but if you don't like it, then don't post here anymore.

This is not some 'slippery slope.' It's moderation of a problem that needed addressing.

I direct you to my original post:
"But seriously, folks. I don't care what you have to say about TKD/Karate/etc. so long as you say it intelligently and coherently."

There were no less than seven recent threads devoted to talking about how moronic TKD is, and I got tired of it. It was unproductive and served only to lower the quality of these forums.

If you have a problem or a question, don't hesitate to PM me.

personally I've never 'bashed' TKD but I'm just leery of the censorship, perhaps I will take your advice.

                            hear hear Ryanhall

bri I know how a gedan barai goes, but not all that looks like a block was meant like a block in Koryu uchinadu (forerunner of Karate)
Like in the 3rd form, it doesn't have to be a low block (the one that is combined with an out/inside block) but a strike to the groin

Loads of the moves used in present day Kata have a hidden "Bunkai" meaning...... But a Gedan Barai is a Gedan Barai, regardless of what Bunkai types think.

                              Taekwondo is crap though.
