What happens is that a MT fighter that augments his training with groundfighting may be called MT but as soon as a Karate fighter does that, he should stop calling it Karate
These days no single art fighter is doing well, even the GJJ and BJJ people train their standup part more than in the past if they want to fight in a MMA event, I remember Royce claiming there is no striking in GJJ ( he said in JJ ) but you can see a lot of BJJ/GJJ fighters entering have trained their strikingskills
Does this mean they should stop calling it BJJ/GJJ?
If a karate school decides to continue calling their style karate after mixing it with ground fighting that is up to them even though I would no longer see it as just karate.

When I say "Are called" I mean in events like UFC they are called that
Otherwise you couldn't call most MT fighters MT because they have had previous experience in MA
It is not the MA themselfs that put the labels on themself, it's the promotors, because is sounds better
I did Karate for the most part, on the side I did all kinds of arts, if someone asks me what kind of MA are you? I will most of the same say Karateka but in real fighting I'm MMA
MT/Kickboxing, for me, was just a slight modification of what I already did in Karate
Even a lot of the JJJ techniques weren't strange to me because Wado is made up out of Okinawa Karate and JJJ (Shindo Yoshin Ryu)
Even in Jodo and Iaido, I could rely on previous training from Wado ( stances are from traditional arts like Kenjitsu)
Wado even has a kneeled series of techniques, so in a sense there is some groundfighting in Karate
So personally I can say I'm a Karateka, no matter what I train at the moment
Of coarse if you include it in the teachings, what one teaches isn't style xxxxx Karate anymore, but why wouldn't it be karate anymore, the hands are still empty aren't they
What am I training right now: Freefight/MMA
but only since a few weeks and I only consider this physical training I don'rt expect to learn much new stuff.
Bri, so even after training combative, you will still use stuff from Shukokai karate, can't have been al bad then

Thats true. It gave me the mechanics to hit hard with my rear hand, a "double hip" action. That was the saving grace of Shukokai. Many other styles gave out black belts to people who had never hit anyone or anything.
But it was still 95% rubbish.

WHAT THE?
There is alot more to martial arts than self defence and physical excercise, what about the whole mental growth thing?? perhaps the peoplewho do "the martial arts crap for s/d" dont need to use the physical aspect of their training when defending themselves, they might perhaps even get out of the situation using only there mental ability, of which they studyed in the their martial art ! (KANA?)

I always love to hear what Muay Thai,Bjj,and MMA people have to say about karate and kung fu
You guys are soooooo funny.
Wow! UFC/Pride has proved to you guys that all striking arts are a waste of time.
Yeah Muay Thai,Bjj,and MMA's are the be all end all to fighting why even waste my time huh?

If I look into the distance of fighting, I see that in Pride UFC type of MMA the distance is more than in K1, because of this I think that someone who first did a lot of pointsparringmatches (WKF/WUKO style) and then changed to full contact will have an advantage because you can sting and get back to the right distance ( I used to say act like a pickpocket) if neccesary
Mind you only training in pointsparring will get you your a.s.s. whooped
I also have this strange thought that with high kicks, it depends on the distance what kind of kick is better, snap or thai, short distance I think snap, long, thai
btw I see a lot of incorrect thai kicks, only the leg is slung forwards but the hip isn't used properly
Best high kick starts as snap but follows through as thai ( a lot of crocop kicks are like this)
Like I said after you have competed once in a MMA, the next time we can't call you by a style anymore (MMA isn't a style in itself) because if you are soley grabbling, you will have trained some stricking skills ( or at least defences against it) if a striker, you will have trained some groundfighting
No matter how complete you think your Art/style is, you wil have borrowed from others, if not, bye bye
It is strange but this traditional-bashing in't a factor on a dutch MMA forum I visit (www.shoto.com), somehow they do not need to put down the traditionals to prove themself

Well i see it this way, every martial art/fighting style has its ups and downs, they are all ment to be effective in some way. The person whos taking it is the one where it makes the difference. If they have the physical ability, the style should be effective.
Also about which one is more useless or better, its hard to say since there are so many factors in any one fight to prove which is better. Like muay thai/karate is efficient for striking, wrestling/judo is efficient for grappling/throws, BJJ is for strikes and groundwork. Its all personal preference and ability. Now everyone quit argueing lol
