I am a liberal.
A lot of liberals just have a blanket "I hate guns" attitude towards firearms. However, I am a bit different. Firstly, the citizens who register their weapons and follow all the legal procedures are NOT the people who you have the worry about. As long as people take adequate safety measures (like keeping their guns in a safe or having a trigger lock ESPECIALLY around kids) they should be able to have a firearm.
The problem with guns is that there is simply too many of them floating around on the street available for cheap purchase. These are the ones that are used in most crimes. The typical violent criminal who commits home invasions sure as hell isn't going to use a gun that's registered under his name. Of course these crimes lead to home owners feelng scared and buying more firearms. These legal firearms are stolen via burglary and the cycle continues.
As others have mention Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling for Columbine" shed some excellent light on one of the major causes for this cycle to continue. This cause is of course the media. I live in Seattle, a very safe place. However, I turn on the news at 5 o'clock and what do I see? I usually see 2-3 violent news stories to start off the news broadcasts. The population of Seattle is roughly 540,000 people, 3 violent crimes per day in a population that large doesn't mean our streets are dangerous criminal cesspool. However when people are bombarded with these stories of crime every single day of their lives, of course that is going to skew their vision of safety. And of course, the only way to protect yourself is to buy a gun.....
