    I am a liberal.

A lot of liberals just have a blanket "I hate guns" attitude towards firearms. However, I am a bit different. Firstly, the citizens who register their weapons and follow all the legal procedures are NOT the people who you have the worry about. As long as people take adequate safety measures (like keeping their guns in a safe or having a trigger lock ESPECIALLY around kids) they should be able to have a firearm.

The problem with guns is that there is simply too many of them floating around on the street available for cheap purchase. These are the ones that are used in most crimes. The typical violent criminal who commits home invasions sure as hell isn't going to use a gun that's registered under his name. Of course these crimes lead to home owners feelng scared and buying more firearms. These legal firearms are stolen via burglary and the cycle continues.

As others have mention Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling for Columbine" shed some excellent light on one of the major causes for this cycle to continue. This cause is of course the media. I live in Seattle, a very safe place. However, I turn on the news at 5 o'clock and what do I see? I usually see 2-3 violent news stories to start off the news broadcasts. The population of Seattle is roughly 540,000 people, 3 violent crimes per day in a population that large doesn't mean our streets are dangerous criminal cesspool. However when people are bombarded with these stories of crime every single day of their lives, of course that is going to skew their vision of safety. And of course, the only way to protect yourself is to buy a gun.....

On another note, does ANYONE agree with what Ashcroft is doing now? Under the "Patriot Act" he can search your house for no reason, detain people secretly without trial, go into your house of worship without a warrant, get a list of books you've checked out from the library without a warrant, the list goes on and on and on... Oh yeah, don't forget his efforts to create a spy network consisting of people like garbagemen and postal carriers who Ashcroft would have paid to keep an "eye out for terrorist activities". Thank god that scheme was rejected by Congress.

Somehow I don't think this is what all the Patriots who died protecting this country would have wanted.

There is certainly nothing patriotic about the Patriot Act. Really all it does is give the government more power than it was ever allowed to have. The people they can search don't even have to have anything to do with terrorism. They don't need any probable cause. They just stick your name in a list and go right along. Also I bet most of the people they are looking at have nothing to do with terrorism and they are using that intelligence for other purposes. They are just looking for more power. Power corrupts while absolute power corrupts absolutely. If they had it their way then the bill of rights would be stricken from the constitution.

...nothing. Moore has an agenda and this is NOT a documentary.

I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not going to pay to see it.

I can deal with people like Bitty and others having opposing view points and being able to back them up with logic. However Moore is inflaming an ignorant public whilst taking great liberty with facts.

Not to mention pulling in a ton of money in the process.

"I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not going to pay to see it."

This is a rather poor attempt at thinking.......... Its like a kid covering his ears and shouting "I'm not listening I'm not listening!" when you are trying to tell him something he needs to know, but doesn't want to know.

I recently read "Stupid White Men" by Michael Moore. I certainly didn't agree with everything he said, but I didn't discount it without actually knowing what he said!

Come on Spunker. Weigh up both sides of the argument. Don't just swallow Rearender bullshit.

The man got an Oscar in a category he didn't belong in. It should have won 'Best Comedy'

If you have the tape, loan it to me and I'll be happy to return it. I'm not contributing to the gross sales in any way shape or form.

Could be the title of his new film.......

I don't have the tape Spankster! I haven't seen the film, but I can send you the "Stupid White Men"book if you email me a postal address. A gift from the Thai Bri no less.

Hey, I didn't vote for him. But he's a site better than the alternatives we were given.

I don't know of too many politicians anywhere that I'd presume not to be idiots. Your boy William Jefferson THOUGHT he was smart...Rhodes Scholar and all... but then he kinda got caught with his pants down eh? Not too smart in my book.

I realize you won't be happy until the Marxists are in charge, but I hope you can stand the wait...

Ohhhh, yeah. I want to give you my postal address... Open up to a nice package of dog doody to be sure.

The problem with your Utopian society is that the pigs, by their nature, will subjugate the other farm animals with the grand idea of the collective, only after having all their teeth pulled.

I've seen some Michael Moorer stuff - here's how it goes...

He and his camera man and support staff ambush a representative of the opposition (say, an executive for a company Moorere thinks is polluting), they stick a camera in this guys face and start throwing accusatory questions at him which they have already researched.
If the guy tries to answer of the cuff, Moorer can out talk him because he has planned the questions; if the guy gets pissed off at having been surprised by a camera crew, He looks like a jerk, if he calls security or the cops, he looks like a facist; if he knows more than Moorer, or comes out looking good, Moorer edits the film, or just leaves that section out of the film.
In other words, Moorer films are fake. They are staged just as surely as George bush landing on an aircraft carrier is staged, and just as dishonest as Rush Limbaugh telling you about liberals.

For christ sake, in order to have a representative government, the people have to think critically about what they are being told. We have to question Micheal Moorer, We have to question Rush Limbaugh, we have to question John Ashcroft and George Bush.
We can't just wrap ourselves up in a political party, or group and run around following our guy and hating their guy no matter what is being said.

AND...and...um...I'm going to quit before this gets any less coherent.

Although I didnt get to see the end (my R.E. lesson ended) his conclusion seemed to be that the reason there is so much gun crime in america is due to a combination of guns and fear (fed to them by the media).

Canada has guns. Not many shootings in canada. Many canadians leave their doors unlocked even though they live in a big city. No fear. They even play the same violent games and watch the same violent films. The only difference seems to be fear.

I got some relatives in canada. Might visit them someday...
I will only say one thing about that bag of shit, dressed like he's one of the blue collar guys while he rides in his limo, M Moore. He won an award for the best documentary, well, it's being investigated and looking to revote that award because that movie has fraudulent statistics and edited clips to give false perceptions.

                              edited: I left out "Bigot"

No, but it sho 'nuff can discourage it!

Some other esteemed member of this discussion made the point that it seemed ironic to train yourself in the use of sticks, knives, empty hands and other means of violence but then draw the line at firearms. Those other "primitive" means can be just as deadly so why make the distinction? Violence is violence. Deadly force is deadly. I can kill you with a rock, or a stick. And my girl can kill me with a look.

Anyway, I have always supported the right to arm bears.
