  • I have a question.

Hi. I have a question. I recently recieved a horrible loss in an open style controlled tournament at a local bar. I am not the greatest but i am a little bit experienced. I was standing up with this guy and he was hitting me with some type of open hand strikes. I have no idea what type of art this was but he completely demolished me. I made it through all the rounds but he crushed my nose, swelled up both of my eyes to the point to where i almost couldnt see and was getting me with these incredibly painful leg kicks. But it was not MT style. I found myself unable to defend myself against his extreme hand speed and strange fighting style. I have never lost a fight as bad as i did this one. The guy was extremly small. about 5'4 and maybe 150 pounds. I am a large guy at 6'6 260 i was expecting to win the fight fairly easily.I have never encountered any style that has the open hand style before and i was wondering if anyone had an idea what kind of style this was?

It's kind of hard with just the information provided. I'm not an expert but I have had my fair share of fights and have researched many styles. Nothing comes to mind from your descriptions. Is there any additional information you could provide like:

Did the guy hit you with at the base of his palms (where palm meets wrist)?
    Were his kicks chambered?
What was his stance like? Position of hands and feet? Did he change his stances?

Also were you not allowed to grapple?
Because I don't understand why he would strike with his palms open, that's just asking to have his fingers broken and thrown.

Pandaman, not ALL styles, fights, or competitions are MMA grappling events. There are still some traditional gi wearing, stand up fighting, true blooded martial ARTIST around. Don't fall into the brainwashed masses opinion that it's all about being a mixed martial artist.

As far as the style in the fight, it sounds like it could very well have been either Kempo or Hap Ki Do, a Korean style. Both of these styles utilize doing the most damage possible with flurries of attacks designed to break the opponent down.

Could be a number of styles of gong-fu, chinese kenpo, silat etc.

Whitesensei, I was pointing out that in a real fight or tournament, to have your fingers extended (open hand) is foolish. Because if you're up against an experienced fighter / grappler they'll rip your digits right off or at least put you in a painful position. It's also possible to have them damaged during a close quarter scuffle or ruled tournament or whatever this may have been.

Chinese Gung Fu / Chin-Na, Korean Hapkido / Hwarangdo / TangSooDo / Taekyun / Taekwondo and Japanese Jujitsu / Judo / Aikido, all of which I might add are Traditional Martial Art styles have grappling / joint locks in their system. I wouldn't credit everything involving "grappling" to MMA.

Also, just because there are people who wear a traditional gi standing in some tournament or fight doesn't make them a true blood martial artist. Don't believe everything you see in the movies.

sounds like silat or tomoi. i would go with tomoi since alot of them blend silat with it. this would explain the punishing kicks.

Open handed strikes allow the attacker to readily grab after a strike but like you suggest, leave their fingers vulnerable too.

Strikes become blocks and blocks become strikes.

I'm gonna bow out to let the masters talk about it.

That's just about one of the most uneducated comments I have ever read. Next time you are in fight with someone who is pummeling you with open hand strikes, try and catch his fingers.

                  Moron.

Kinda might want to consider there is usually another hand and grabbing takes time. Plus aim to grab my hand while I'm striking at you with it as fast as I can. At your face to boot.
