ok to common scenerios 1. a guy football tackles you in a bar and trys to get mount so he can pummel you school yard style.
    2. a guy pushes you in a bar and the starts throwing hooks from straight punch range then quickly closes for the clinch
I want answers from bouncers, military peeps, cops, security people and anyone else who has real world experience with violent altercations to the nth degree. If you like this type of "what do you do stuff" cool cause I'll bet we all have like thousands of real life examples he he

        Question for Mike

        Mike,

What is the advantage of being armed in this situation. I assume you are talking guns and knives. Would you stab or shoot the guy for starting a bar fight?

        Seems excessive.

I would try and finish ASAP but would also try and avoid any permanent or serious damage that would likely see me end up somewhere where I would really need my self defense skills (Prison).

You really shouldn't be playing football in a bar. That's your first mistake. And since when do they allow bars on school yards?

            Mike,

I agree that the ear removal is also too extreme and it was not my intention to single you out I was just wondering about your use of weapons in this scenario. It seems to be a scenario that a bouncer would see very often.

Over here in Ireland (and in Australia) if you hit someone with a glass and it broke you would (probably) be charged with "Assault with a deadly weapon". It can be treated as a knife so that makes it pretty serious. If you cut a guy up and the witnesses said all he had done was start swinging or try and tackle you, you would be in real trouble.

I have only been bouncing about 4 years but have managed to never go to the floor. I agree that I would never want to go to the ground, when you are a bouncer everyone is your (potential) enemy.

            Bluewavegym,

I would say that situation 1 is where training in MMA or Wrestling would be exceptionally helpful due to the highly developed takedown defense and the ability to get back up from the ground.

For situation 2 I would try and get as close to the guy as possible and tie him up or drop him to the floor. In a security situation you cannot just return the attack and knock the guy out. You need to restrain/control him.

In both situations I would try and stall, etc, until there was at least one other bouncer (assuming there is more than one of you working). It is a lot of work to control someone on your own but is fairly easy with two people (and gets even easier with more).

Let me clarify my point of view. If I was carrying a gun, I probably wouldnt draw my weapon unless my intentions were to click off the safety and shoot it. If I was in an unprovoked bar fight and it would be unprovoked because i'm to old to be rolling around on the floor with someone who wants to hurt me. My martial arts are with me all the time, I didn't purchase them at a store with a special quick release holster. I don't even have a special permit that allows me to carry my martial art concieled in a non- threatening manner. But much in the same sense as a gun if someone picks a fight with me and after a quick threat assesment, if deemed a low risk, I will avoid a fight even if it means cutting the night short and leaving a favorite haunt. In the event I should have to unholster my martial arts training (kempo/kung fu) the safety is off, and I will hurt you before you hurt me. Those are my intentions and I am a worthy and determined opponent. I've found most mature martial artist wont feel the need to prove the cedibility of their style or effectiveness as is it so commonly put in this forum. We know the effectiveness of any martial art in the hands of a well rehearsed and determined artist. We also appreciate the great responsibility wich we hold in our hearts to shed a positive light on the martial arts community as a whole.
