the mans athleticism and toughness is incredible, respectable inmop.

he sacrificed his body to entertain fans, cause i can tell you those guys dont make shit unless they are hogan or rock status. getting suplexed head first through tables and jumping into real barbed wire, night after night is no easy feat.

if you look at the image closely, you can see all the scars on his body. those are not fake bro.

I worked as a corrections officer and was taught the same defensive tactics technqiues police officers are taught. Levels 1 and 2. It's different for each state.

No you cannot strike someone, although it is recommended that cops get some form of striking training, i.e. punching, kicking, elbow, knee.

Body control and takedowns are usually the types of self defense training mostly emphasized. I'd recommend any art judo, jujitsu, hapkido that embraces takedowns, holds, locks and a little ground fighting. Most of it you'll learn at the police academy in a defensive tactics class. (only 8-12 hours of training though :O )

        Good Luck

im telling you bro, a good judo school is what you need.

as a cop, you need to stay on your feet. letting a suspect take you down and get to your weapon is all bad, so you need to have awesome balance. wrestling offers this as well. these two arts will help you stay on your feet, and help you control and subdue attackers effectively and decisively. however, judo has some other things not offered by wrestling like joint locks and chokes. joint locks are great pain compliance techniques that can help subdue and control people. so are chokes. a guy high on pcp could probably take tons of shots to his face and not even feel it. put him in chokehold and deny his brain oxygen and he will be out like a light.

Cops need something that is simple, easy to learn and, of course, effective.

Only MA enthusiasts would take a martial art long enough for it to get to the stage were they can make it work.

As for the others? Basic striking is the way to go.

Nope, they shouldn't go around hitting everyone. They should use verbal persuasion skills. But for those people who get physical? A bang in the bonce would aid compliance.

people keep commenting that police "can't" strike someone. what's the actual regulation? is it just that they can't strike an unarmed person while detaining them, or is it more in depth?

I agree you need to take some type of grappling for the ground control, locks, submissions and time holds. I also think you need to focus on the stand up grappling as well so you will know how to control some one while standing and not have to go to the ground. If you are going to be a police officer or a corrections officer then you also need to train in some type of Filippino Martial Arts so you will have some knowledge of weapons.

I have trained several police officers and corrections officers in the past and they have all said that the weapons training they was very beneficial to them.

If you are working in a prison system then you will be in confined spaces a lot of the time as well as having multiple attackers a lot of the time. You will also be faced with improvised weapons much more often. For these type of circumstances you will need to know how to defend yourself against such weapons while remaining on your feet.

For the times when you are taking to the ground you will need to submit the attacker as quickly as possible and get back to your feet.

It is my opinion that any art you take will give you the edge over most people you encounter on the street. Just do yourself a favor and continue to train even after the acadmey.

                  Good Luck

Our police officer's are doing Krav Maga.
I don't know much about it, but I've heard it' pretty effective.

I myself would use Taekwondo... I've been training it for 5½ years, so it's like a reflex to use a block or a kick when getting attacked, I guess.
Otherwise Karate. Both powerful and effective.

Though, every martial art is effective if used in the correct way.

Would you know if the stick work you do in Kali is like the stick work they would teach you when in Law Enforcement.

Oh and thanks all for your reconmendations.

I know that most of the acadmey's here in Texas that I know of do not do a very good job with their stick training. The one mistake I see over and over with police officers and the different facilities they are trained at is they have the stick in their right hand but are in a left lead. This takes away about 12" or more of your reach. Of course a lot of that depends on who is teaching the class and what type of background they have. If the instructor who is teaching the weapons class has a FMA background then you are better off. However what I see happening alot of the time is the instructor is some one who has only the basic knowledge when it comes to the stick and knife. Atleast you will get the basics... thats why I said earlier that you need to make sure you continue training even after the academy.

A friend of mine who teaches had a police officer he was training that actually got paid while taking lessons. He was able to get approval to take lessons while on the pay clock. Also, you can claim a certain number of hours of your training for your CE requirements.

                        Hope this helps.

You know what i would do? I would go to a bar and find a bouncer. Those guys know all the legal holds that are effective. After that i would STRONGLY suggest modern ninjitsu but the trainers are impossible to find with all the flakes. It's very good for disarming opponents via guns and knifes and all that jazz.

No offense Shadex... but you are kidding about the bouncer thing right? Most of those guys don't have a clue when it comes to real self defense. As far as them knowing the law they are not the ones you need to ask. Unless they are an off duty police officer they will not have a clear cut vision of what is "law" and what is not. The majority of those guys are told what they can and can't do by the club owner. It is not something they learned from studying the state penal code in law school or at the police academy. If you really want to know what the law is in your state then find a police officer and ask them.

                            Again no offense intended...
