  • Driving from UAE to Muscat with rental car

I’m from the USA and I am planning a trip to Oman in a couple of months with my wife and toddler. We’ll fly into Abu Dhabi, stay for a few days, rent a car from Hertz, and then drive to Muscat.

Can anyone share advice on the Oman boarding crossing with a rental car situation?

My understanding is that I’ll need Hertz to provide me with proof of insurance for Oman, as well as a NOC certificate (no objection cert). I have confirmed with Hertz that they can provide these things when I pickup the car.

I also read that I should get visas online to save time at the border. And that I should take the Hatta crossing (which unfortunately looks a little out of the way).

Any other advice or recommendations? Am I forgetting anything regarding insurance, forms from the rental agency, etc? Am I crazy for doing this vs hiring a driver? I think not, but would love some reassurance.

I thought about flying, but we’ll have just taken a 15hr flight to AUH, and going back to the airport with a toddler will be the last thing I’ll want to do.

It's been a long time since I've been there, but based on what I've seen, Dubai traffic could get insane, but once out of the city, it's not too bad.

I did a similar road trip a few years ago, driving from Dubai to Muscat with my wife and toddler. The border crossing is pretty straightforward as long as you’ve got the insurance and NOC certificate from Hertz, which is great that they’re providing them for you. The Hatta crossing is a bit out of the way, but it’s definitely the smoother option. As for the visas, definitely get them online—it’ll save you a ton of time at the border. One thing I’d recommend is double-checking the rental car’s condition before you drive off. We had a minor issue with a car in the UAE once, but Hertz was quick to resolve it. Also, I recently visited https://mayors.ae/brands/ghost/ there. It was such a stunning car, and it reminded me of how much I appreciate having the right ride for long drives.
