How to find a couch that isn't garbage?

My last couch was a nice big sectional from one of the big boxes. A $2500 (list) couch that I got for like $500 and was like new. My spot was noticeably used after a year and needed additional support beneath my cushion after a couple years. It was constructed with 1x2, 1x1, and low quality glulam looking stuff. So cheap.

My current couch is a higher end deal I got at a garage sale for cheap. Near new, down feather everything, and some kind of real leather. and my seat is already sunken in quite badly after 8mo. the framework behind and under the cushions are poking thru.

IF (big if, I imagine pricey) I wanted a quality, heirloom-type piece of furniture, where would I go to get it? What do I look for in a quality couch or sectional? Why does it seem that all modern furniture just garbage?

You would have to research quality furniture available in your area. I'm not sure I would put big box or garage sale furniture in the quality column. I could name a few quality lines but what we have up here is most likely different.

When it comes to finding a good couch that won't fall apart quickly, the key is in the construction. Hardwoods and high-density foam are both good signs of quality. For something as important as living room furniture, taking the time to do some research into brands known for durability can really pay off.
